Do you have the Windows 7 DVD?

If not, do this:

Create a Windows 7 System Repair Disc

Note: the below can only be done if your machine has a a type of CD/R or DVD/R optical drive installed. Also depending on the exact type of OEM your machine has you may be unable to actually create a SRD.

• Click on Start(Windows 7 Orb) >> Run...(or the Windows key and R together) to bring up the Run box, then copy/paste the following command into the box and click on OK:

  recdisc.exe
• Allow the UAC(User Account Control) prompt via selecting Yes.
• You should now see a menu like the below:-

• Put a blank rewritable CD/DVD in your optical(CD/DVD) drive and then click on Create disc.
• Note: If a AutoPlay window pops up, just close it.
• When the SRD has been created you will see the below:-

• Now click on Close >> OK. Leave the disc in the drive as we will be using it shortly.
• You now have a Windows 7 System Repair Disc.

Insert the Windows Repair disc in the computer and boot from the CD.

See How to Set BIOS to Boot from CDROM for information on how to boot from the CD.

When you reboot you will see something like this. Click repair my computer



Select your operating system


Select Windows Memory Diagnostic


Select Restart now and check for problems (recommended)


The computer will restart. Wait the memory scan finish, it takes about 5 minutes.

Command prompt:


Type SFC.exe /Scannow and press [ENTER].

Wait Windows run SFC.exe and see if the problem is solved.

SFC.exe would not run: kept getting message: "There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run SFC again". Rebooted 5 times, but this message would not go away.

Access again the System Recovery and choose the command prompt option:


Type "cd.." (without the quotes) and press [ENTER]

Now, type "cd windows\winsxs" (without the quotes) and press [ENTER]

Type "del pending.xml" (without the quotes) and press [ENTER]

type again "sfc /scannow" (Without the quotes)

This might work now.

Hi WhiteHat. That worked: sfc /scannow ran successfully. Message at end was "Windows did not find any integrity violations". Unfortunately, the PC still freezes randomly. Also, since running the repair disc, I'm now get a "boot log manager" screen asking me which OS I want to run, Windows 7 or Windows 7 Home Premium.

Access again the System Recovery and choose the command prompt option:


Type "Bootrec /FixBoot" (without the quotes) and press [ENTER]

Restart your computer and see if this still happening:

Hello, I ran "Bootrec";
1. /Fixboot - ran with a "completed successfully" message.
2. Restarted, but still getting the "Windows Boot Manager" screen with choice of 2 WIN 7 boots. I'm guessing the 2nd one is a WIN 7 recovery partition, but I never got the dual boot menu before.
3. PC still freezes randomly.
