Type "msconfig" and press [ENTER]

Select the tab Services and click in the option Hide all microsoft services

Next, select the option Disable All > Apply > Ok.

Restart your computer and see if the computer is still freezing ramdomly

Thank you WhiteHat. The PC no longer freezes. The only quirks now are the boot manager screen and a message from Malwarebytes Pro, after logon: "[OpenEvent] Failed to perform desired action. Error code 2"

# Step 1 #

You will start the services (One by one) and see which one is responsible.

Keep in mind that you need to restart the computer to each service activated.

Type "Bootrec /rebuildbcd" (Without the quotes) and press [ENTER]

1. There were 5 services listed in MSCONFIG: SAS (Superantispyware) Core, MBAM, AVAST, Mozilla Maintenance, and NVIDIA Driver Helper.
AVAST was active throughout all of the one by one activations.
SAS and MBAM by themselves ran fine, but together caused freeze.
Mozilla Maintenance slowed the PC.
NVIDIA Driver Helper caused freeze.

2. The MBAM error message only appeared when we diabled MBAM in MSCONFIG, and the error message went away as soon as we reactivated
MBAM. Do I stll need to uninstall, CLEAN and reinstall MBAM?

3. "Bootrec /rebuildbcd" did not make the boot manager screen go away. FYI, "Bootrec /rebuildbcd" completed successfully, with
message "Total Identified Windows Installations: 0".

I just encountered a non-random freeze (not the first time). After bootup, if I don't log onto an id for 5 minutes or more, the ID freezes after logon. When this happens, the hidden icon area shows MBAM only, whereas during a good logon, it show AVAST, then Filehippo, and minutes later MBAM.

Yes. Uninstall the SAS too.

1. Open the Start Menu.

A) Right click on the Computer button on the dark right side and click on Properties.

B) Go to step 3.

2. Open the Control Panel (icons view) and click on the System icon.

3. In the left blue pane, click on the Advanced system settings link. (See screenshot below)

4. Close the System window. (See screenshot above)

5. Under the Advanced tab, click on the Settings button under Startup and Recovery. (See screenshot below)

6. Under System Startup, select a operating system from the drop down menu to be the new default operating system, then click on OK. (See screenshots below)

7. Uncheck the box:

• Time to display the list of operating systems.

8. Click in Ok and restart your computer.

I did all of the above. Fixed the boot manager screen, but the PC still freezes. AVAST and MBAM are the only non-MS services running.

Which version of Avast are you using?

Disable the Avast and the MBAM services and see if the computer is still freezing.

I was using AVAST version 7.0.1456, but I just uninstalled it, as neither MSCONFIG or SPYBOT/Tools could disable AVAST (the check mark came back as soon as you hit OK). I also disabled MBAM. So far the PC is running without any freezes.

Hi,

You need to reinstall the antivirus. If you want to reinstall the avast, follow this instructions:

Download the latest version to your desktop from here
Download aswClear from here
Go to Programs and Features > add/remove and uninstall Avast
Reboot back to safe mode and run aswClear (select all versions of Avast ) once for each version, no need to reboot in between
After the last one reboot

Install the updated Avast
If you do not want chrome then deselect when the computer reboots on the finalisation page



Remove OTL:

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

• Click Start.
• Open My Computer.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• Select the View Tab.
• Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
• Click Yes to confirm.
• Click OK.

I did all of the above (uninstall AVAST, ASWCLEAR, OTL/CLEAN, "Do not show hidden"). PC is running fine now. Thank you very much.

Do I re-enable MBAM Pro or have we determined that it is incompatible with AVAST?
