Heya, stumbled upon this site while trying to find a way to remove some annoying adware and such from my computer - like Aurora :tazz: - so maybe you can help me? ;) Here's my HiJackThis log.

EDIT: I've tried running both Ad-Aware and Norton with no luck.

Hi again

Please print out a copy of this to make it easier to follow as you will need to reboot your PC several times. Follow these instructions carefully, they may appear to be complicated but i am confident that with teamwork we will clear this up

As well as Aurora, You MAY also have a LOP infection that often comes together with Messenger Plus. To remove it we will try the simple way first.

1. Go to Add/Remove programs. Double click on "Messenger Plus!" (or click on Remove)

2. The "Messenger Plus! - Setup" is now displayed. Click on the Uninstall button. Note: options displayed on the first screen are not related to the sponsor program.

3. The sponsor screen is now displayed (if you don't see it, search for it in your Task Bar). To prove that someone is currently reading the screen, you have to type the code that is displayed. Once you enter the code, press Uninstall.

4. If you entered the code properly, the program will ask you to confirm that you want to uninstall. You must answer "Yes" to this question, else, you won't have another chance of uninstalling.

5. To complete the uninstallation, follow the instructions that are displayed (the first one is to close all your Internet Explorer windows, that's very important). When everything is complete, restart your computer and, hopefully voila one nasty infection is gone.

You will still have messenger plus but without the LOP.

Next Download and install CleanUp! Here

Set PC to show hidden files (click link if you do not know how)LINK

Click Start > Run > and type in:

services.msc

Click OK.

In the services window find Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc)
Rightclick and choose "Properties". On the "General" tab under "Service Status" click the "Stop" button to stop the service. Beside "Startup Type" in the dropdown menu select "Disabled". Click Apply then OK. Exit the Services utility.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and check the following:

O2 - BHO: Google Toolbar Helper - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - c:\programfiler\google\googletoolbar2.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: &Google - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - c:\programfiler\google\googletoolbar2.dll (file missing)
O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Ensure that no windows open except HJT and clixk FIX CHECKED.

Now with HJT click on misc tools then on Delete an NT Service

in the popup box copy and paste the following

SvcProc

ok it

Now run Cleanup to clear out temp files, junk etc.

Run Ewido that i see you have and save the report it creates.

Reboot pc into normal mode and rescan with HJT and post the log back

Right, did what you told me, but after doing that my windows got messed up... Went from being the normal WinXP look to looking more like WinME.
EDIT: And now it's gone off looking like Win95! I think Cleanup deleted some wrong files or something...
Here's the HJT log though:

Cleanup isn't set up by default to clean out this sort of file.

Try this first

Regarding you XP in classic mode firstly do the following.

Rightclick on your desktop > choose properties > display properties and choose Windows XPstyle.
Click apply and OK.

You have to choose the tab 'display properties', not the tab 'Theme's'.
The tab display properties is the 4th one from left. There will be the ' "windows and buttons" menu in it where you can select Windows Classic or Windows XP-style.
Select Windows XP-style.

If you can't find the Windows XP-style in there -- only the windows classic, tell me afterwards.

Also check next:

Go to start > run and type: services.msc
Search in that list for themes and check if it's running. If not, click start the service.

I can only find the windows standard style there, and no XP. Guess some program did too good of a job :tazz: I also checked services.msc, and themes was on. I'll have a go at seeing what the Windows CD can do for me.
EDIT: Ick...ok, couldn't find anything. Those folders just got me confused hehe

As I thought -- you're missing the luna.msstyles in that folder.

Let's fix this.
Miekiemoes uploaded a copy of her luna.msstyles, so download it here:

Unzip it and MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder you unzipped to next folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
Don't move it to anywhere else than that folder!

When moved it there, rightclick on your desktop > properties ... and look if Windows XPstyle is now present again. Choose apply and OK.

If not, reboot first, and try again to select Windows XPstyle

Hi Again,

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? and AntiSpyware Net's spyware article: Spyware, Adware, Malware: What it is, how it got on my computer, how to get rid of it, and how to prevent it.
