In addition to other problems such as ICM problem, MSN messenger(since rectified) interferring with emails and browser, a new problem has ocurred which leads me to believe there is something going on with my Windows XP. I tried to dowload the latest version of Avira Free anti-malware program. After 6 hours of waiting using dial-up connection, I received a message indicating "invalid files". Should I have removed the earlier version of Avira?

you may never get a accurate download of a large program using dialup...get one of your friends or a coworker that has broadband to download it for you and burn it to a cd or copy it to a usb drive... you may also sometimes use the library computers to do it...
