Hi lanidrac,

The next thing I recommend is to fix those programs that are installed directly into the C:\Program Files(x86) folder. Let's just take a look in there and see if we can identify which programs are installed into that folder.
Step 1

For 64bit systems, download SystemLook from here.

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    :dir
    c:\Program Files (x86)

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.

Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

Hi Crowbar,
Last night I noticed a new issue -- it's something that hasn't happened before, and I have no idea if it's even related to the steps we've been following, but I feel it's worth mentioning. When I plug in digital cameras or my smartphone to the laptop via a USB cable, nothing happens; that is, the usual sound I hear when connecting a device does play, but otherwise the device is not recognized whatsoever, and I can't access its files/contents. The one exception I've seen is that my SD card reader is still functioning normally (the laptop recognizes it, and its files are accessible), but the other devices aren't working at all. Does this seem like something we could try to fix?

Yes that is worth mentioning. If I can't get it back working, we have some very good techs around that certainly can.

Give me a little while to look at what you posted and the USB issue.

Hi there lanidrac,
Let's look into that USB issue, and determine what programs are in the wrong folder,
When you plug in your phone or camera you say you hear the USB sound, have you tried going to Computer and seeing if the phone or camera is listed as a drive letter?

Step 1
Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • List Devices and please select the All radio button
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Step 2
Let's see where your programs are installed.
Click on the Start Orb > Control Panel > Uninstall a Program
Maximize this window
look at the header where it says Name, Publisher, Installed on... and right click on a blank section of that header bar. Now click on More...
Check the box for Location and click OK
Now look thru that list, and note which programs that are installed in the C:\Program Files (x86) folder
Please post a list of those programs for me.

Hmmm, that 2nd part does not seem right. Perhaps I can explain a little better.

When you did my step 2 from my last post, the file paths were now visible in the Uninstall A Program screen. I was looking for any programs that installed in this folder, not one of its subfolders:
C:\Program Files(x86)

If for example you see this:
C:\Program Files(x86)\adobe
I am only interested in any programs that are in the program files folder itself, if it is installed in a subfolder of the program files folder, it's installed correctly.

I believe your copy of FireFox is installed in the programs files(x86) folder so that is a good example.

If it's easier for you, try making a couple of screen shots of the list.
Press the Start Orb and type Snipping Tool into the search bar.
Click on Snipping Tool
Select the entire screen and save it as a jpg.
Scroll down one screen and repeat.
You can attach those jpg's in your next post.

In the meantime, I will be going over your driver list that you posted.

Let's address the USB issue first, but you can still post those screen shots for me anytime.

Please click on the Start Orb and type devdevmgmt.msc into the search box and press enter.
The Device Manager should open up.
Please expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers
Please highlight the top instance of USB Root Hub and press Delete. Click OK to confirm.
Do this for all of the instances of USB Root Hub.
After deleting the last one, please reboot your computer. After it has restarted re-attach your camera and your phone.
Can you see them now?

Hi,
Sorry about that -- I believe iTunes and Mozilla are the only programs installed directly into the program files folder.

Re: the USB issue: when I restart, USB Root Hub seems to reinstall itself (see screenshot), and the devices still don't work.

Thanks again.

Did you restart, as your screenshot says to, before trying your devices?

Yes - I tried the steps 5 or 6 times (including restarts), but so far the devices still aren't being recognized.

The USB devices work now -- I just had to also uninstall the ICH9 Family USB Universal Host Controllers (in addition to the USB Root Hubs), and everything was fine upon restart. Thanks for your help!
