Hi, I am building a pc as I am starting a computer games technology course, I also do alot of video editing. I use sony vegas, cinema 4d/3ds max (3d animation) boujou and after effects. I have a list of most things I have chosen and would like to know if they are compatible, what would be better or what is overkill and what else I need. I may do some gaming as well but mainly play xbox so it is not essential.

What size case would you prefer full or mid tower?
Most modern MBs have very good quality integrated audio chips and unless you spend a silly amount of cash on an add on audio card you will see very little if any improvement over the onboard audio chip.

Gday Boozerbiz,

Good choice for the CPU, the more powerful/more cores, the better
Mobo, would also be my choice.
RAM, Advice more, max out the board. drop the speed to 1600
I think you would get better results using a Nvidia card, GTX 570/670.
Stay with the default heat sink and fan.

Thanks for the detailed reply! that was exactly what I was looking for, should have joined a forum ages ago
I will look into the video cards suggested and keeping to the original heat sink and fan sounds good to me if its cool enough!
As for the tower, Im guessing it would be best for a bigger tower so there is room for upgrades and add ons in the future.
Im in the UK, I suppose my budget is around £1000, everything I listed came to £960, but that's just on Amazon, I haven't looked around anywhere else for price yet as Im sure someone will have some wise changes for me to make first!
I will be using Windows 7 64-bit, im hoping to get it cheap on one of those student saver things, so it doesnt have to come into budget.

Have you got any experience with the Asrock mobo? how is it compared to the sabertooth? Am only asking because I think I remember seeing a couple bad reviews.
Also, am I right in thinking that I should only need to get a better cooler if I was to overclock? And the processor I have chosen could run at 3.9 on turbo?.....would I need a better cooler for that?

I specify them all the time for gaming rigs, so far no failures, A well featured board with everything you need. If your budget would allow, I would go for the more robust Sabertooth.

Not gone for an SSD, I think capacity will factor in for all your software,
Only included 2 other HDDS, Suggest you work up to 5, when $$ available.

Thanks for your help guys, I can wait until September time to have the pc ready so am going to buy the parts over the next couple of months as and when they come on offer (if they do) Might as well try to save some money!

Nice build

The Antec case just shades it for me as it has a 3yr warranty as opposed to Cooler Masters 1yr warranty + the Antec has the removable/washable dust filters.

If you save your build at PCPartpickers the prices will adjust automatically so all you need do is keep a regular check on the site.

I would go for the Raptor first as the boot drive, give you that little speed edge.
Your video work will be a bit slow, (doing everything on one drive) but will vastly improve with additional HDDs.

I have been researching SSDs a bit more and think I will get one for my OS and my applications, im guessing its easy to control what saves to the SSD so if i stick to my main apps and clear out projects I finish then do you think its worth it? I will still continue to buy extra harddrives for space. I think i will end up wanting an SSD for that extra bit of speed and it seems as though it will be easier to set it as the boot drive on my first installation.
