Hi, I am building a pc as I am starting a computer games technology course, I also do alot of video editing. I use sony vegas, cinema 4d/3ds max (3d animation) boujou and after effects. I have a list of most things I have chosen and would like to know if they are compatible, what would be better or what is overkill and what else I need. I may do some gaming as well but mainly play xbox so it is not essential.
Here be the list.....

Intel 3rd Generation Core i7-3770K CPU (4 x 3.50GHz, Ivy Bridge, Socket 1155, 8Mb L3 Cache, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0)

Asus SABERTOOTH Z77 Motherboard (Socket 1155, 32GB DDR3 Support, Intel Z77 Express, ATX, PCI-E 3.0, USB 3.0, Quad GPU AMD CrossfireX, Supports HDMI 1.4a)

GSkill Ripjaws Z Series 1866 CL 9.0 16GB Memory Kit - Red (4x 4GB, DDR3, Quad Channel, Intel XMP Certified)

Asus ATI Radeon HD 6870 DirectCu Graphics Card (1GB, PCI-E 2, 915MHz Factory Overclocked Edition Operation)

Corsair CWCH100 Hydro Series H100 Extreme Performance CPU Cooler

SanDisk SDSSDH-120G-G25 120GB Ultra SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD

Corsair CMPSU-700GUK Gaming Series GS700 High Performance 700W Power Supply

Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black 1 TB 7200 RPM Internal Hard Disk Drive

Also any help on a suitable computer case would be great and advice on a sound card, i use an onkyo receiver for my audio.
Please ask any questions you need to, all ive done is scan the internet for what to get but thought I may as well ask so I get a better answer!
Cheers!

:welcome: Boozerbiz

For convenience I have added some notes to your OP;

Intel 3rd Generation Core i7-3770K CPU (4 x 3.50GHz, Ivy Bridge, Socket 1155, 8Mb L3 Cache, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0) Top CPU with hyperthreading for your video work, some additional info http://www.bit-tech....-3770k-review/9

Asus SABERTOOTH Z77 Motherboard (Socket 1155, 32GB DDR3 Support, Intel Z77 Express, ATX, PCI-E 3.0, USB 3.0, Quad GPU AMD CrossfireX, Supports HDMI 1.4a) Nice MB.

GSkill Ripjaws Z Series 1866 CL 9.0 16GB Memory Kit - Red (4x 4GB, DDR3, Quad Channel, Intel XMP Certified)
16GB of Ram great for video editing, multiple screens and applications running.

Asus ATI Radeon HD 6870 DirectCu Graphics Card (1GB, PCI-E 2, 915MHz Factory Overclocked Edition Operation)
A work station card would be better for video work and there are better and less expensive cards available such as the GTX 480, GTX 570 and HD 7870 http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814125418 benchmark http://www.videocard...=Radeon HD 7870

Corsair CWCH100 Hydro Series H100 Extreme Performance CPU Cooler If you use anything other than the heatsink and cooling fan supplied with a CPU it will invalidate your warranty, Intel are clear on this;

• damage to the Product due to external causes, including accident, problems with electrical power, abnormal electrical, mechanical or environmental conditions, usage not in accordance with product instructions, misuse, neglect, alteration, repair, improper installation, or improper testing

Full article @ http://www.intel.com...b/cs-009862.htm

SanDisk SDSSDH-120G-G25 120GB Ultra SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD Great for faster boot up times.

Corsair CMPSU-700GUK Gaming Series GS700 High Performance 700W Power Supply Before selecting a PSU you must choose and confirm that all other hardware is available and then use a PSU calculator to ensure you have enough clean and stable power, more is better and make allowances for any possible future upgrades such as an additional HDD or second video card http://images10.newe...tage-Calculator

Western Digital WD1002FAEX Caviar Black 1 TB 7200 RPM Internal Hard Disk Drive Great HDD but make sure it has 64mb of cache.

Also any help on a suitable computer case would be great and advice on a sound card, i use an onkyo receiver for my audio.
What size case would you prefer full or mid tower?
Most modern MBs have very good quality integrated audio chips and unless you spend a silly amount of cash on an add on audio card you will see very little if any improvement over the onboard audio chip.

Please ask any questions you need to, all ive done is scan the internet for what to get but thought I may as well ask so I get a better answer!
Cheers!

If you tell us what your maximum budget is and where in the world you are we can put you a list of parts together to consider and also try to save you some cash.

NB: You have not list an OS such as Windows 7 64-bit - what will you be using?

Gday Boozerbiz, Posted Image

Good choice for the CPU, the more powerful/more cores, the better
Mobo, would also be my choice.
RAM, Advice more, max out the board. drop the speed to 1600
I think you would get better results using a Nvidia card, GTX 570/670.
Stay with the default heat sink and fan.

I will list a full parts link later.

Please have a look at this Tutorial.

Thanks for the detailed reply! that was exactly what I was looking for, should have joined a forum ages ago
I will look into the video cards suggested and keeping to the original heat sink and fan sounds good to me if its cool enough!
As for the tower, Im guessing it would be best for a bigger tower so there is room for upgrades and add ons in the future.
Im in the UK, I suppose my budget is around £1000, everything I listed came to £960, but that's just on Amazon, I haven't looked around anywhere else for price yet as Im sure someone will have some wise changes for me to make first!
I will be using Windows 7 64-bit, im hoping to get it cheap on one of those student saver things, so it doesnt have to come into budget.

Thanks again for your time, any other questions please ask!

Needs a bit of tweaking to be able to add an SSD and stay within budget but let us know your thoughts on the list of parts @ http://pcpartpicker.com/uk/p/biUX

iammykyl is always good at finding bargains so he should be able to help us get the complete list you require for under £1k

Yeah looks good, thanks!
Have you got any experience with the Asrock mobo? how is it compared to the sabertooth? Am only asking because I think I remember seeing a couple bad reviews.
Also, am I right in thinking that I should only need to get a better cooler if I was to overclock? And the processor I have chosen could run at 3.9 on turbo?.....would I need a better cooler for that?
Sorry for all the questions but thought I may as well ask, is better than scanning the internet for hours comparing everything!

I specify them all the time for gaming rigs, so far no failures, A well featured board with everything you need. If your budget would allow, I would go for the more robust Sabertooth.

Also, am I right in thinking that I should only need to get a better cooler if I was to overclock?

Yes.

And the processor I have chosen could run at 3.9

would be the luck of the draw. Maybe higher, maybe lower.

....would I need a better cooler for that?

Not if you have a case with good cooling.

We are happy to answer question but please be mindful that where are opinions differ and you get options for a part, you need to research as ultimately it will be your choice.

Not gone for an SSD, I think capacity will factor in for all your software,
Only included 2 other HDDS, Suggest you work up to 5, when $$ available.

RAM, start with 16GB, 2 x 8GB, Quad channel, sticks using only 2 slots. Not currently on the CPP site, > http://dealforu.co.u...800CL10D-16GBXL

PSU, Antec 850W CP, not currently on the CPP site, > http://www.misco.co....wer-Supply-Unit

http://pcpartpicker.com/uk/p/bn5B

What thought have you given to the monitor?

Thanks for your help guys, I can wait until September time to have the pc ready so am going to buy the parts over the next couple of months as and when they come on offer (if they do) Might as well try to save some money!
I think this is what I am going to go for....

Intel 3rd Generation Core i7-3770K CPU (4 x 3.50GHz, Ivy Bridge, Socket 1155, 8Mb L3 Cache, Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0)

Asus SABERTOOTH Z77 Motherboard (Socket 1155, 32GB DDR3 Support, Intel Z77 Express, ATX, PCI-E 3.0, USB 3.0, Quad GPU AMD CrossfireX, Supports HDMI 1.4a)

DDR3 16GB PC 1600 CL10 G.Skill KIT (2x8GB) 16GBXL RipjawsX

Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Harddrive (Maybe 2 depending on budget, but will continue to add more as money becomes available!)

EVGA GeForce GTX 570 1.25GB Video Card (It seems to be quite cheap at the moment at scan so will snap this up now!)

Antec DF-85 ATX Full Tower OR Coolermaster Haf 932 Full tower (Undecided, any thoughts??)

Antec CP-850 850W

Sony AD-7280S-0B DVD/CD Writer

If you have any more thoughts please let me know, also where to keep an eye on the deals! (Maybe you know of some sales coming up?)
As far as the monitor goes, I have been using my samsung tv, but I may have to get something smaller and sensible eventually as the big tv aint great on my eyes!

Nice build

The Antec case just shades it for me as it has a 3yr warranty as opposed to Cooler Masters 1yr warranty + the Antec has the removable/washable dust filters.

If you save your build at PCPartpickers the prices will adjust automatically so all you need do is keep a regular check on the site.

Yeah I agree, I was leaning toward the Antec because of the washable filters, looks like the 3yr warranty seals the deal!

Am now on PCPartpickers so lets hope for some cheap prices! thanks!

It will be a great build.

Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Harddrive (Maybe 2 depending on budget, but will continue to add more as money becomes available!)

I would go for the Raptor first as the boot drive, give you that little speed edge.
Your video work will be a bit slow, (doing everything on one drive) but will vastly improve with additional HDDs.
Optimiz the Boot drive, > http://www.overclock...e-for-ssds-hdds
CPP is good as a one stop resource but does have a limited vendor list. This searches tool, > http://www.staticice.co.uk/ takes more effort, but when you are buying s specific part, it's worth a look.

Consider adding an anti static wrist strap, http://www.newegg.co...N82E16899261005

This is the kind of Monitor I would purchase for your work screen, > http://www.newegg.co...&Tpk=Dell U2410 with a second for tools, browsing, > http://www.newegg.co...N82E16824236100,

I have been researching SSDs a bit more and think I will get one for my OS and my applications, im guessing its easy to control what saves to the SSD so if i stick to my main apps and clear out projects I finish then do you think its worth it? I will still continue to buy extra harddrives for space. I think i will end up wanting an SSD for that extra bit of speed and it seems as though it will be easier to set it as the boot drive on my first installation.

The website you suggested is good thanks, is worth spending the time looking if its gonna save some money!

I think my mates gonna get a wrist strap for me

Ill see how i get on with my tv but will keep those monitors in mind if i start struggling!

Also Ive been looking at the gigabyte z77 udh5 instead of the sabertooth, any thoughts?

I shouldnt have started looking so early lol i will probably have a completely different set up by the time i actually buy!
