Hi, Weird things are happening on my Dell w/Windows ME. It started when you turned it off (correct turn-off with start button). When you boot it up, it went into DOS(?) mode - (black screen with white letters on it) - asking for a disk in drive A:. Then, we got past that and when you rebooted, scandisk would run forever. We cancelled that & it rebooted to the Windows Desktop screen.
We thought we had a virus (our virus protection expired). So, I ran TrendMicro - free scan and there were no viruses. I then bought a new Norton Anti-virus to update it. Tried to install it last night and it froze. I first deleted the old virus program because Norton said to uninstall it if it was prior to 2002. It was 2001. Everything was cool until I started to install it. Then it just froze although it said it was installing. Oh, I also exited all programs except explorer & load-something. Was that wrong? Exiting the programs??? Should I try to run it with all programs running in the background? More background info: I had ZoneAlarm as a firewall running. But, I think I downloaded the "wrong" one, not the free one, and when it said it expired, it seemed like all [bleep] broke out. It could be a coincidence but I can't be sure. I uninstalled it.

I was also going to download Spybot Search & Destroy after I load up the virus program.

I now have no virus protection on my dinosaur, no firewall & it's still wacking out.

So, now when I boot up, I get the black screen with all my computer info on it and at the bottom of the screen it says something like hit (DEL) key. When you hit the delete key, it boots up to the Windows Desktop screen - like everything is fine but it isn't. It never booted up like that before. What gives??

I was also going to see if it's overheating. It's in a computer desk w/o a huge amount of air & maybe there's a bunch of dust, etc. down there. I was going to disconnect it and blow it out with the compressed air. Is that a good idea?

Is my computer dying? I'm starting school again on Monday and need it working. So, I appreciate all and any help you can give me.

You guys rock! Thanks.

ill be startin school on tuesday too so i understand the importance of your computer at that time <_<

Let us take a closer look at what is running on your PC. We'll need you to use a free diagnostic tool (HiJackThis) and post a log back here with the results.

Click the HijackThis Guide in my signature, download it and follow the instructions in the guide.

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, DO NOT delete or modify anything yet! Someone will be along to tell you what steps to take after you post the contents of the scan results.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

O2 - BHO: iWon BHO - {C298FB42-E3E2-11D3-ADCD-0050DAC24E8F} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\IWON\IWONBAR\1.BIN\IWONBAR.DLL

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. <_<

Hi SoxRok,

Is it o.k. if I try to install the virus protection before I do the Hijack This deletions?? Or should I install it after the deletions? I'm concerned about going online w/o any virus protection.
Thanks.

I got rid of the stuff you said. Here's the new scan. I rebooted and I still have the black screen after I start up. I hit the (DEL) key and the computer starts like normal. Is that the way I'm going to have to boot up from now on?? Is that o.k. to start like that?
I'm going to install the virus protection now & will let you know if I run into problems there. Thanks again for your help. Good luck in school tomorrow.

Try clearing your BIOS/CMOS. Disconnect the power, remove the computer case, look for a battery on the motherboard (like shown below). Remove this battery for at least five minutes. Then replace the battery, and reconnect the power. Reboot and see if it worked. You'll need to reset the system time and date.

A typical motherboard battery:

Hi Soxrok,

Bad news bears.....sorry for the delay in getting back here but my computer is totally wacking out now.......

I removed the battery and cleaned out some dust, put the battery back in and it still booted up with the hit the DEL prompt. I could live with that but it I leave the computer on for a while it goes into an A: prompt asking for the boot disk. Then, it does all kinds of weird things like the dreaded blue screen and it goes into safe mode. Now, it's saying something about the drive partition or maybe there's a virus. I know there isn't a virus because I ran trendmicro and it came up clean. I then downloaded spybot search and destroy and it found some crap and immunized it. I have updated my virus protection to Norton 2004 and that came up clean. The drive was making some clicking/clacking sounds but not all the time. I can't get to the desktop so I can't get my homework out. A friend said I can get my file out in safe mode but may not be able to help me until next week. I have to use the school computer because I can't get online at home. THis is such a drag I cannot tell you. I really appreciate all of your help and I understand you have a lot of people to help. Sorry if I was a little anxious but I get that way when school starts. No excuse....but I get nervous not having a working computer. Right now, I need to get my stuff off before I throw it out the window. What's the next step?? TIA

That's often called the "click of death", and usually an early indicator your hard drive is dying. I'd back up any data you need to keep ASAP, and begin looking for a new hard drive. <_<
