Hi,

I have had a few problems in the past and someone did help me improve my Computers performance.

I have still been able to use it reasonably...but lately since I updated to Firefox 12 I think it was..
I am having problems opening certain websites...in particular yahoos webpage..

I have had Antivirus Avira and firewalls running since my last issue...but I suspect that I still have some sort of virus as my computer can take a long time to load on certain days and I get a lot of various
messages crop up on doing so....I also found that my desktop horizontal lower blue bar has reset to vertical position and I am unable to reset it back...

I wonder if anyone can advise ?

Thank you in advance.

Heres a copy of the OTL log file that I produced through OTL Old timer...

I have not included the bottom part as it had some details ( LOP and Purity )that I didn't want to post in public that would take a lot of deleting...I will consider posting it if needed via PM if that would be OK.

I also want to point out that somehow it seems a Mcafee software program somehow seems to have found its way onto my system and I do not ever recall installing it..

I also seem to have a lot of problems with Adobe Flash player as it keeps crashing.( maybe also in connection with Java)Maybe I dont have enough memory to run it ok..as I know my disc is almost full.

Hope this may help...

Hi and welcome to GeeksToGo! Please make sure you read all of the instructions and fixes thoroughly before continuing with them. If you have any queries or you are unsure about anything, just say and I'll help you out :)

It may well be worth you printing/saving the instructions throughout the fix, so you have them to hand just in case you are unable to access this site.

Please note:
  • Remember to post your logs, not attach them. So, any logs from any programs we run, should be just 'copied & pasted' into your reply.
  • Please only run the tools that I request. I know malware can be frustrating but running other tools in the meantime and between posts, only makes it harder for us to analyse and fix your PC in the long run.
  • Please subscribe to this topic if you have not already done so. Please check back just in case, as the email system can fail at times.
  • Just because your machine is running better does not mean it is completely cleaned. Please wait for the 'all clear' from me to say when we are done.
  • Please reply within 3 days to be fair to other people asking for help.
  • Please tell me if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available
  • When in doubt, please stop and ask first. There's no harm in asking questions!

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, I would appreciate you letting me know. If not please perform the following steps below so I can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

  • Please download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it.

  • When asked if you want to download Avast's virus definitions please select Yes.
Note: If avast! antivirus is already installed, just do the next step.
  • Click the Scan button to start scan.

    Posted Image
  • On completion of the scan click Save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply.
  • Also on Desktop there should be a file called MBR.dat after that, zip it and then attach it here

Hi Render,

Thank you for acknowledging my Computer problem...
Very much appreciated.

At the moment my computer is running slower than before I posted b4...

so much so every step is slow to respond..even writing at times.

I just downloaded aswMBR with firefox and it downloads it to a download page...does not give an option
to save to desktop..I also downloaded definitions. then found I already have a copy of amwMBR on my desktop, but unsure if it has the definitions / or if they are updated. It said also its a full Anti virus program....i was thinking that it was only some other type of program...

Anyway for now im running the new download...there was two options quick or full scan. im trying quick one 1st...and will do full later..

In relation to MBR.day file...can I copy and paste and post direct or do i have to zip it in winzip 1st then attach it ?

thank you

Dowsp

Hi,

To save downloaded files somewhere else as in downloads folder in Firefox you have to change its default settings as follows:
  • Click on Tools menu and select and click on Options. Or if you're not using Menu Bar click on Firefox in the upper left corner of FF window and then select Options and click another Options.
  • Options window will open.
  • On General tab under Downloads section select Always ask me where to save files and click on OK button to confirm changes.

As new forum software now accept dat files you can just straight attach MBR.dat file without zipping it first.

Can I ask is it possible to fix the virus while running aswMBR ?

there is an option that says FIX MBR as well as FIX....

I was wondering if the FIX MBR option allows one to fix while scanning.

IF so it could help it run much better if it could delete or fix that virus while in operation.

OK will do,

As I am still only on a quick scan, but its taking a long time...Is it ok to create a log and MBR.dat file
just for this ? and hopefully try and select fix after...

so to at least try and fix or delete the virus before I consider doing any further indepth scan !

I just want to make sure if 1st I send you the log files etc before I select FIX ?

Hi,

It shouldn't take so long to do a quick scan.

Anyway... Fix or FixMBR will not remove malicious file, so please don't perform that action after the scan. Just post aswMBR log and attach MBR.dat file, please.

I am not sure if it is doing a quick scan or not..

I thought that it was as there was a option box drop down menu on the lower left hand side that indicated
quick scan, but upon looking at the options within the menu, there were three...
I did not actually select one of them..I had just assumed it had been the top one automatically that would take effect...BUT maybe I should had selected a particular one, ie the "c" drive..or [...] which Im not sure if this allows one to select a particular file or folder...etc..

What I found was I thought that Id shut down some webpages that I had open earlier, but I found they were still open....What has been happening lately is when a webpage is open and say I minimise it...
I can see a icon for that page...but sometimes the icons disappear and I cannot tell if it has just closed or the icon has just gone missing somehow...I don't think that I have had this happen before.
So when I think that I have closed a webpage down, and even when the page icons disappeared...it may be open.

sometimes if I open a webpage again say later, another page icon appears and this was the page I thought that id closed...

earlier I found 3 pages still open when I thought they had been closed...

so this is why its taken so long..

Im wondering if I should close down my machine and restart it...as I supsect some reason its running slower than it should do normally even with a infection....I have noted at times it runs better on some days than others ...

It has certainly been running a long time....

IF however its the standard scan ( NOT a QUICK SCAN )...I know that some scans will take a long time..sometimes several hours.

Hi,

Here are major possible reasons why your computer is running slow:

Low RAM:

510.21 Mb Total Physical Memory

Low free space on system partition:

Drive C: | 34.43 Gb Total Space | 1.10 Gb Free Space | 3.20% Space Free | Partition Type: NTFS

How old is this laptop? According to hard disk size I would say around 10 years?

I was aware that I only had low disk space on a 34 gig disk...I didn't think that i even had more than 500 mbs free...so 1 gig is more than I expected. I removed some doc files onto a external hard drive a few weeks back before my problems.

I think I obtained my Laptop about 2005....so maybe Ive had it 7 years...and I have used it a very lot of time since ive had it, more than maybe would be expected.

Im still not sure how long you would expect the scan to take, but if you think it should take no longer than say 3 to 4 hrs, I think I will restart it and run it again overnight...( its mid night where I am)
