Hello potential knight in shining armor -

It seems my laptop has been infected with a transponder.bolger. I had no idea what it was (still don't), so I google-d it and found a lot of helpful advice to other victims on this site, but I didn't know if I was allowed to follow it without having someone look at my HijackThis log, which by the way, I have no idea how to use. I can't seem to find the alleged temp folder that it's in. I ran the scan once without copying it into a new folder, but I didn't know if I should upload that one so I'm asking for help starting from scratch. I know so little, technically, about computers so I'm hoping there is a patient and knowledgeable person who can help. I don't know if it matters, but my OS is Windows XP (upgraded from ME). I've noticed that since my subsequent upgrade, I've been having a lot of trouble and I just noticed with this infection that my Norton Anti-Virus seems non-existent even though I upgraded it about a year ago (I know that's a while, but it doesn't even seem to be running anymore!)

Sincerely,
Damsel in distress
:tazz:

I uploaded the above yesterday and since have figured out how to move HijackThis from the temp folder to its own. Here is my log...pls. help!

Welcome cinnerj to Geeks to Go!

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

***

Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

***

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us...050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

***

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

***

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

***

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

Thank you, G2i2R4, for your help. I've completed all the steps per your post and am pasting my updated HijackThis log as well as the results from the Ewido scan.

If all looks clear, could you let me know the best way to protect my laptop from getting infected again?
