Try changing Windows Update to notify you only.

Click Start, type windows update.
Click on Windows Update.
Click on Change Settings in left pane.
In the Important Updates drop down box, select Check for updates .....

The next time updates are offered, install them one at a time until you determine which one is causing the problem. Then use Last known good to recover and the next time it's offered, right click on it and select Hide update.

mind if I jump in here...more info would help

like when it started...
anything you did to try fixing it...
like uninstalling the update that started the issue, system restore ectra
whats the make and model of your computer

please don't get a attitude...the info you posted is equivalent to telling a car mechanic your car doesn't start unless you get out and kick a tire first...then it will start

I used system restore but it failed and was prompted to choose a different restore point but when I chose that it restarted my computer successfully and said system restore was successful but the next time I started my computer again I got the same problem. Same thing happened when I used startup repair.

All the updates failed and I changed the setting to don't download updates automatically(set so no updates could be downloaded).

I reset the CMOS by removing the battery for 10 mins then plugging it in again made no different so it wasn't a BIOS problem.

Hp pavillion P6 series.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like your system is pretty messed up. I would suggest backing up all your data then restoring to factory new state. Which P6 do you have?

According to the Troubleshooting & Maintenance Guide:

System Recovery options
You should attempt a System Recovery in the following order:
1. Through the hard disk drive, from the Windows 7 Start menu.
2. Through the hard disk drive, by pressing F11 on the keyboard during system startup.
3. Through recovery media that you create.
4. Through recovery discs purchased from HP Su pport. To purchase recovery discs, visit
http://www.hp.com/support.
