Today, I decided I was finally going to get around to overclocking my notebook's processor. I know that that's a very sketchy thing to do at best, but the processor was marketed as "able to overclock to 2.3GHz with AMD Overdrive" and so I decided that it was a safe thing to do.
I opened the utility, overclocked to 2.3GHz after a few simple tweaks, and everything was great. However, after a few reboots, all four of my cores are now running at 2.4-2.6 GHz, and no matter what I do, adjusting settings in AMD Overdrive can't bring the speeds down. I've restored to defaults, fiddled with the sliders, to no effect. Normally more speed would be great, but when my cores run at over 2.5 GHz, the voltage jumps from 1.1500 volts to 1.4125 volts, and I'm worried that that voltage increase might put my hardware in danger/reduce life expectancy extremely significantly.
So I suppose my question is:
Is a voltage jump of that magnitude harmful to my computer? If so, how do I fix it? And if not, how do I regain control of my processor speeds so I can set them back down to 2.3 GHz? I really would rather keep them at a safer level, despite the fact that even with the 1.4125 volts, I idle at around 40 C.
I'm running a HP Pavilion g6 with an AMD A8-3520M CPU that has a base speed of 1.6 GHz and comes with a Radeon 6620G GPU.
I'd really like to stop tinkering, so any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks again.
