Hi Geeks,

My Girlfriend's laptop is randomly freezing while in use. There doesn't appear to be any programs causing it. The BSOD never actually shows though - screen just goes black and I have to force power off. I cannot determine exactly what is happening. Can anyone help?

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: BlueScreen
OS Version: 6.1.7600.2.0.0.256.1
Locale ID: 6153

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 124
BCP1: 00000000
BCP2: 85EC54DC
BCP3: 00000000
BCP4: 00000000
OS Version: 6_1_7600
Service Pack: 0_0
Product: 256_1

I can provide a dmp file if this helps.

Cheers
Steve S.

This software requires the right version of Windows Debugging Tools for your type of computer. Because this is not normally installed and is not redistributable, we suggest you select the download option from below. Then the right package will be downloaded to a temporary folder and the required files will be extracted from the package automatically. You only need to do this once
click on download then try running it again

Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

11 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. No offending third party drivers have been found. Consider configuring your system to produce a full memory dump for better analysis.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

Perhaps a dot or arctic 5 will sort this?

yep...
this may be a job for a shop...
the system fans need cleaning while the laptop is open
while you have the heat sink off to apply the thermal paste give the fins a good cleaning
to much thermal paste is just as bad as to little...also take ESD precautions while inside the case and touching components
don't get to concerned about a particular brand of thermal paste...after extensive testing there is only a couple degrees difference between the best and the worst performers...the only big difference is the prices
also make sure the cpu heatsink fan is both connected and spinning...

I used to work in a computer repair workshop so I'll have no trouble stripping it down and cleaning it. I do notice the laptop runs "quite warm" sometimes but the crashes can be random and sometimes crashes even when cool. I'll keep you posted anyway.
