Download the attached fix.txt to your desktop

Run OTL and press Run Fix
A dialogue will open asking for the location of the fix.txt

Hi,

Hope this one worked out better, I've attached the Wordpad file generated at the end.

By the way, a number of programmes that used to open automatically on startup are not doing so now and the keyboard isn't working at the moment (I'm doing everything by mouse). I think some of the Norton security stuff is also missing/damaged.

The good news is though that I haven't yet seen a Firefox screen open!

Hi,

I expect it's hard to pick up on all of the things that aren't working without using the computer for a while, but the thing I would most like to get fixed is to have the keyboard working again. It's a wire-free keyboard, does that make any difference?

I ran devmgmt.msc, which tells me that there's something wrong with the WLAN stick, but I'm not sure what as I have accessed the internet, having reactivated the stick. I will provide more information on this in the next post.

Norton is telling me something is wrong, but I can't pinpoint what. Maybe it's best just to reinstall so that the default settings reapply?

Also, numerous programmes that always opened on startup aren't showing up in right hand corner of the task bar (not necessarily a bad thing in all cases). I can't access the commands in Internet Explorer either. I assume that most of the software problems can now be solved by reinstalling?

Nice to have my computer behaving itself at last, thanks!

Silly question, have you checked the batteries ?

A reinstall of Norton should cure the problems being reported there

With regards to the programmes are you talking about the area in the screenshot

And the commands in IE are you meaning this area

Hi,

I was sure I changed the batteries only a couples of weeks ago (they usually last for months), but I switched them and the keyboard is working fine again. Good tip, thanks!

Norton is no longer complaining (I now have a green tick on the corner icon instead of a red cross), without reinstalling. Would it be best to reinstall anyway for safety?

I will keep an eye on how the computer behaves for the next couple of weeks, but in answer to your two last questions, yes and yes.

Thanks very much for your help.

OK for the IE commands
Right click on the top bar and select Menu Bar

On the task bar is there a little arrow
If so click on that and see if it reveals the icons

If not right click the Task bar and select Properties

Click customise
And then select whether to hide or show icons by clicking on the right

Leave Norton if it is now happy

Do you wish me to remove my tools now ?

Hi,

I've put most of your tool kit in a folder in my documents (a lot of them were on the desktop).

Is it advisable to remove them?

RSP

PS Computer working beautifully now, lovely to have it back in my control. Thanks!

Lets remove them cleanly for you

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix
  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    then click OK

    Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. For aswMBR just delete the files

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.
