Hi everybody

Two days ago a friend of mine adressed me via MSN Messenger. He gave me a link to a file 'beach_pictures_packed.pif' and I was stupid enough to click on it. As soon as I did, my Messenger automatically adressed my other on-line friends. I closed down Messenger immediately afterwards, but then found that I couldn't start my Norton Anti-Virus, nor HiJackThis. I rebooted my machine, but since then i can't even connect to the web anymore. Everytime I try to log-in Messenger or try to connect via Explorer, I can't connect to the server. As you can imagine, this is extremely frustrating.
I ran Avast, Spybot and Hitman Pro, but they couldn't find anything. I also managed to run Norton and HiJackThis in safe mode, but even Norton, with definitions only a few days old, couldn't find anything.
Therefore, I'm kindly asing for your help. Here's my log:

Hi Rubinho. Welcome to GTG. ;)

Please run winsockfix to re-establish your internet connection.

winsock fix

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Are you sure I have to fix those entries related to my Autodesk software? In case you're not aware, that's a technical drawing program used through-out the world...
But if you think that's best, I'll certainly go ahead.

You do not have to delete them.

Sometimes when a log is infested, I have them delete most of the 016 entries. Lots of times, people have dozens of 016s and it's very tedious looking through each and every one of them.

It does not delete the program. It deletes the ActiveX objects, which will be downloaded the next time you visit that particular website. Here's an explanation.

This section corresponds to ActiveX Objects otherwise known as Downloaded Program Files.

ActiveX objects are programs that are downloaded from web sites and are stored on your computer. These objects are stored in C:\windows\Downloaded Program Files. They are also referenced in the registry by their CLSID which is the long string of numbers between the curly braces. There are many legitimate ActiveX controls such as the one in the example which is an iPix viewer.

This way, the next time you visit a valid and trusted site, it will be downloaded. If you recognize the 016s I identified for elimination, then don't put a check mark next to them. :tazz:

Hey Coachwife

I tried winsock fix (twice), but I didn't work: still no connection. I did run HiJackThis and fixed all the entries you singled out. Next I tried to run Norton and, surprise, it worked! When I tried to run Live Update it gave this strange comment;
"One or more entries for Symantec Live Update servers exist in your Windows hosts files", but, according to Live Update, non should exist there. So it gave me the option to fix the file/ location Live Update had found: "127.0.0.1 liveupdate.symantecliveupdate.com". I went ahead, but then Live Update told me it was "unable" to solve the problem. Furtermore, no update could take place because my connection is still out.
I also checked my internet settings in the Windows Control Panel, and under Connections, no connection seemed to exist (!).
Prior before consulting you, I had personally removed an application, both via deleting the executable and via HiJacktHis, called "wkssvc32.exe" from C:\windows\system32. This was advised to me by someone with the same kind of problems. Maybe this gives you a clue, but it didn't change my problems.
I ran Avast Adaware 6, with definitions 6th June 2005, but to no avail: nothing was found.

Here's my new log:

It's late at night (23:35) here now, but I'll try to do an Intelligent Update of my virus definitions tomorrow, by downloading it on another PC and then installing it on my own. Hopefully, Norton will then detect the virus. The virus description in the link you gave me looks very similar, so we'll have to wait and see what happens. It could just work and detect the virus.

I succesfully updated Norton and performed a scan. It found a staggering 269 files infected by the w32.Randex virus. I deleted all files, since Norton wasn't able to repair them.
Next, I tried winsock fix again, but no result: still no connection.
Now I still don't have a clue, but here's a new HiJackThis log:

You look clean.

Let's try one more thing before I send you over to the xp forum.

Download and run: http://www.silentrun...ent Runners.vbs

Run the SilentRunners.vbs file. If your antivirus has a script blocker, you will get a warning asking if you want to allow SilentRunners.vbs to run. It might say something like "Malicious Script Warning". This script is not malicious so you are safe in allowing it to run.

Let it run. It can take a few minutes. When it has finished it will produce a Startup Programs text file. Copy and paste that text file here in your next reply.

Hey Coachwife

I've manually restored my connection by re-entering the IP addresses. I also ran a scan with the Housecall scanner. It found some files Norton didn't detect, they looked like the backdoor files of the worm. So it seems I'm getting somewhere.

Have you installed this program?

WinRAR

Navigate to this file and right-click on it and tell me it's properties.

C:\Program Files\WinRAR\rarext.dll

I do have WinRAR installed. rarext.dll is an archive file, last edited in May 2003, created in September 2003 (that doesn't seem correct, but that's what it says).
What about the infection warnings in the info I posted?

I'm wondering if the items we delete are being archived in winrar. I have never used the program, so I'm not familiar with it's working. I had a log last week that wouldn't get clean because it had a back-up program.

For as far as I know, WinRAR is just a kind of utillity to compress files and folders, just like WinZip.
