Rshaffer and Macboatmaster -

Thanks for taking the time to look up the information. Will review further when I am at this computer tonight.

Will also run Autoruns and report back.

Not sure you could read this:

Some rows are yellow, some are pink. Not sure what the colors mean.

For now, until you observe, I have unchecked items, ran ERUNT and set a restore point and restarted.

Also when I unchecked X "0" "" "" "File not found: About:Home" this woke up WinPatrol to say something about a page change in Internet Explorer.

I really do not need any of these running (except Billminder) for example Movie Maker so feel free to suggest that I uncheck anything you see

Thanks for your help

How is the system running now?

System runs fine except for these two problems:

When running any form of Chkdsk hangs at 6% - been doing this for years
Fan runs continuously but system does not necessarily run hot (I check it with HD Tune - Runs about 107 F in summer, 102 in Winter)

Does your response mean I should delete all the other items running except for what is in your quotes?

Nope the items in the quote are fine to stay. Your autoruns are minimal so they are not a issue.
As far as temps what is the ambient temp in the room you are in? Is there clear airflow around the system?
As far as chkdsk I'm not sure what is going on there because even the chkdsk /r runs through completion on 5 stages with no problems.
Let me ask when chkdsk is running on it's own is there by chance a screen saver , power saver or something like that they may be kicking in?

For some reason you may not be seeing all my items. There were over 150 listed

I noticed the same thing happened with my first Check Disk Report - not sure you were able to see whole report

I tried to attach as a text file but would not work - received "Upload Skipped (Error IO)"

Room Temperature is 77 - 78 in summer, 71 in winter
I use an aluminum iLap cooling pad but computer is about 5 inches away from wall
Come to think of it computer set to suspend at 20 minutes idle, no screen saver

I did get the whole report but only the autoruns part which is normally the first part of the report is what I worry about.
THose temps are a little high and I'm guessing it is due to dust in the fan inside the laptop. When you clear the dust do you just clear the vents on the laptop?

I turn the computer over, remove the plate covering the fans and either blow out or vacuum that area for dust. Also vacuum/blow the side vents. Fans seem a little grimy but afraid to touch them or remove them.

This is a Gateway M675. The bottom view is on page 18 of the manual. Tried to attach picture but received this error "The server returned an error during upload."

Gateway M675 Manual

Regarding autoruns: Would it help to try to systematically remove the other items that are running that are non Microsoft?

When running any form of Chkdsk hangs at 6%

It would help possibly to know at which stage of the chkdsk it fails to progress at the speed we might expect in the 6%

For instance on a chkdsk /r there are five stages and each stage of the five runs to the 100%, so at which stage of the five does it slow down at the 6%

Also if it was me I would cease to use Slimware - slimclean - like most of the programs of that nature it is a little gimmicky and really does nothing that normal maintenance of cleaning would not provide and without the inherent dangers of trusting programs such as slimclean.

Indeed a brief look at the forum reveals quite a few problem reports

https://www.slimware...age2&order=desc

In fact I would advise it uninstall, but that is your decision.

Always hangs up at Stage 2 - for years. Thanks for the suggestion on Slimware. Will remove.

Any opinion on the other items from Autoruns (for example movie maker) to streamline operation of computer?

Chkdsk is sticking at a normal error checking when run manually Mac. The chkdsk /r does finish with now problem. I still wonder if the following is the culprit to the issue per post 22.

Come to think of it computer set to suspend at 20 minutes idle, no screen saver

I agree

I am sorry for asking the question again - at what stage

It was my error I did not spot that on your opening post

Any idea why Check Disk hangs at Stage 2 at 6% for about 2 minutes?

On the NTFS file system, the file indexes, are a way of allowing quicker access to lauch programs and applications.

The FAT32 file system does not use the indexes.

Basically they are a listing of where the system will find the relevant files in the HDD and are contained within part of the MFT - Master File Table.

Generally speaking providing chkdsk DOES complete and you say that it is only about 2 minutes, that is OK and indeed that is not an inordinate length of time.

Although I have never seen in documented, I have little doubt that the use of programs such as slimware, slim cleaner may well be reposnsible for slowing chkdsk.

I would consider exploring how fragmented the drive is.

It may be worthwhile checking that the HDD controller is running DMA mode and has not reverted PIO mode, although if it had all functions accessing the drive would tend to be slow.

To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.
  • Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.
  • In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:
  • Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.
  • Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available.
The HDD will normally be channel 0 but it will tell you which device it is

OK thanks it was just a chance, but as I said, everything would have been slow

Did you explore how fragmented it was.

However indeed, 2 minutes is not an awful long time and it is of course simply working its way through checking the file indexes.

I will leave the question of Autoruns to my colleague -
