One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.
5. Go to Microsoft's site http://support.micro..._drive_problems and follow the steps.
6. Try the guide at this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982116

Thank's to Broni for the instructions

Possible you might just try disconnecting the cdrom and see what happens.

Is that with the cdrom disconnected? Are you disconnecting both power and data cables or did you run the 3rd fix it step?

Ok,
The key here is that this only happens in video games, no other applications do this, right? Or has this been a problem with other programs? Video games stress the computer heavily so immediately memory, hard drive, heat and the video drivers come into question.
>Did you try my suggestion about the Window fan blowing in? Did your crashes stop? I still do not feel that we have conclusively removed overheating as the cause; I have had units that crashed because the Northbridge heat sink was too hot to touch! And RAM (memory) can overheat to the point of failure, believe me it happens, while the CPU is still registering only 40ºC.
> Did you furnish a Who Crashed report to rshaffer as he asked several posts ago?
>Is this only one gamee that seems to crash the computer, or is it any game?
I don't think it is your sound drivers or you would get crashes all the time whenever sound plays, especially if you are using integrated sound, not a separate card. It has been years since I have had sound problems in a unit because the drivers are now part of the mobo driver/chipset installation disk and have been checked at the factory.
Go HERE and click on "DOWNLOADS" at the top menu, then download "Sea Tools for Windows" and run it on your hard drive, just to double-verify that your drive is good. If there are any error message you will get a "FAIL" message. This utility may be used with any manufacture drive, not just Seagate.
Let us know and provide the above information please.

It sounds like the issue is the bad sectors on the hd and maybe some of the game files are located there. That would answer why it only happens in the games. Though a chkdsk /r may mark the sectors as bad and attempt to move the data out to a good part of the drive, I suspect that a new hd is the only way to resolve this issue.
I would suggest trying the SeaTools hd diagnostic as instructed before doing anything else. This will confirm the findings and we will know then to backup all the important data before going any more with this.
