Files still had strange names --- I ran Check disc again and the files are now gone. The Perfect World folder still exists and when I try to delete I get the message File corrupted and Unreadable --- How do I now delete this empty folder?

Run Check Disk again to see if it found more errors or not. I'm starting to suspect you could have some bad sectors on that HDD.

Ok you are getting to many errors. Probably its better to cancel using CTRL+C
In your case i will try to move all the data from that drive and then format and check for bad sectors before putting data again on it.

I'm not sure it needs some testing, for now it seems the File System is very badly maybe its only the FS.
Did you notice if it does strange noises when is accessed?

I normally use the tool from the hard disk manufacture, in certain cases the tool can relocate bad sectors if the drive have some spares.
A good option to check is Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows from Western Digital but it works for other hdd's also.
Doing a full scan will show if the drive have bad sectors or not.
Edit: Doesn't need to be installed, extract the zip and run WinDlg.exe
- Right click on the HDD name and choose Run Diagnostics
- run the Quick Test and then the Extended Test only

Strange for me it recognizes even a USB flash drive!
Try with this one SeaTools for Windows from Seagate, so far i only have found Iomega Drives that uses HDD's from Seagate.
Edit: Make sure you connect the external drive to a USB port directly connected to the motherboard and not to a USB HUB.
