Olymus Digital Dictation - play button on foot switch will not work

Hi there,
I have got a transcription unit that has been working fine and now the play button on the foot switch is not working, forward and rewind on the switch works fine. if the mouse is used it can operate the play button, but takes time away from the operator.
Put a new foot switch in with the same situation.
Re-installed the application over the top again with the same result.
Running on HP DC7600ssf, 512mb, XP SP2

Other than a total rebuild has anyone got any other ideas or a solution to this.
