Hello saxdragon.
I am SGC.
I'm seeing many (almost all) folders on my hard drive marked "Read Only" in the properties menu.
Important: Some files are set the way they are for a reason, especially
system files. The read only setting is a security feature which
prevents unauthorized modification of a file. Please take caution
when altering security settings on your system.
Are you clicking "Apply"?
Your referring to folders, not files, correct?
So when you say "marked" do you mean check marked or is the entire box filled in?
The difference being, a check mark means everything in that folder
is set to "Read Only".
If the entire box is filled it indicates their are some files in the folder set to
"Read Only", and some that are not.

I apologize, for this "explanation" is incomplete/incorrect.The difference being, a check mark means everything in that folder
is set to "Read Only".
If the entire box is filled it indicates their are some files in the folder set to
"Read Only", and some that are not.
The "Read Only" check box for folders is a little misleading.
The filled in box (or indeterminate) setting tells Explorer
to check if the user has set a customized view for that folder.
This indeterminate setting has nothing to do with the "Read Only" status
of the folder, sub-folders, or any of the files within.
You cannot change the "Read Only" setting of the folder itself.
By checking/clearing this box in the properties of a folder you
change the "Read Only" status of all the files within the folder,
but not the folder itself.
If the folder contains sub-folders then you should see a dialog box with two options:
- Apply changes to this folder only - (only changes files in the folder, nothing in sub-folders)
- Apply changes to this folder, sub-folders, and files - (changes all files in folder and sub-folders)
So when you re-open the properties, the check box has reverted
back to being indeterminate(or filled in green),
when in actuality your settings for the files within
have not changed since you clicked "Apply".
Well, there is a work-around available here. You cannot change the "Read Only" setting of the folder itself.
