Failed after about 10 minutes of trying to update. there were four optional updates available that i tried to have it download:

After the download bar locked up several times, and the percent completion and totals sat at 0 for about 10 minutes, the updates failed with this error listed.

Sorry to take so long to reply. I am on vacation with my family for several days, so getting a connection set up was somewhat difficult. Because of this change, before I run Minitool again, I just want to appraise you of the situation:

I am now connected to a relatively unsecured wifi connection (although I designated it as a public network). The first network that I attempted to connect to at the hotel location seemed to connect, but would not load web pages, apparently due to problems with DNS connections. Thus, in summary, my current situation is that I am not on my normal internet connection (in case that will impact the steps to take) and also, that my connection does not seem to be completely solid.

Based on this new situation, should I still go ahead with running Minitool?

Yes please do. Some of the issues are connection but some are internal.

After running it I want you to check a series of services to see if they are on:

Click Start >> type services.msc >> click on it and services will open up.

Go to each of these services and make sure they are started by right clicking on them and then selecting properties.

Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Event Notification
Windows Management Instrumentation
COM+ Event System
DCOM Server Process Launcher

Note back to me with the MiniToolBox log any of these that are not started.

I ran Minitool, and have the report saved on my computer, but unfortunately, the network I was using failed, and the only network that I can connect to seemes to be having problems with the DNS. I am able to speak with people over skype, but am unable to load any web pages in any browser. I am writing this to you on the public computer at the hotel where I am staying, so I am currently unable to give you either the minitool report or the other information you requested. I will continue to try to get my computer to access the internet, but if you have any advice for what I can do as a quick fix so I can access websites (and therefore provide you with the information you requested) I would really appreciate it. I am so sorry for adding an additional complication to this problem, and I really appreciate you bearing with me.

Right down your current DNS numbers before replacing with these so that you can use them when you get home.



Go the Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet, then Network and Sharing Center, and click Change adapter settings.
Select the connection for which you want to configure Google Public DNS. For example:

To change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and click Properties.
To change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click Wireless Network Connection, and click Properties.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Select the Networking tab. Under This connection uses the following items, select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) or Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and then click Properties.
Click Advanced and select the DNS tab. If there are any DNS server IP addresses listed there, write them down for future reference, and remove them from this window.
Click OK.
Select Use the following DNS server addresses. If there are any IP addresses listed in the Preferred DNS server or Alternate DNS server, write them down for future reference.
Replace those addresses with the IP addresses of the Google DNS servers:

For IPv4: 8.8.8.8 and/or 8.8.4.4.
For IPv6: 2001:4860:4860::8888 and/or 2001:4860:4860::8844

Restart the connection you selected in step 3.
Test that your setup is working correctly; see Testing your new settings below.


TEST

From your browser, type in a hostname (such as http://www.google.com/). If it resolves correctly, bookmark the page, and try accessing the page from the bookmark. If both of these tests work, everything is working correctly. If not, go to step 2.
From your browser, type in a fixed IP address. You can use http://18.62.0.96/ (which points to the website http://www.eecs.mit.edu/) as the URL*. If this works correctly, bookmark the page, and try accessing the page from the bookmark. If these tests work (but step 1 fails), then there is a problem with your DNS configuration; check the steps above to make sure you have configured everything correctly. If these tests do not work, go to step 3.
Roll back the DNS changes you made and run the tests again. If the tests still do not work, then there is a problem with your network settings; contact your ISP or network administrator for assistance.

That worked completely. Thank you so much. One thing of concern, however, is that there were no DNS addresses already present in the setting when I went to change them, so I am not sure what I will reset it to when I get home.
