Couple month ago Win7 (I had XP Pro)was installed on my Dell Ddimension9100x86 computer. To begin with, the system became and is very volatile and either crashed a lot or IE8 would stop working. I could deal with it somewhat, but now, I have a new problem: Win 7 stopped recognizing my 2 year old SyncMmaster2233 monitor suddenly. When I shot down computer overnight and turn it on in the morning, it works OK for awhile, but in a few hours it stops again and messes up my desktop and reduces screen resolution to 1600x1200 and shows display as : display device on: VGA, instead of SyncMaster with resolution 1920x1080 (recommended). I had updated SyncMaster2233 driver - still the same problem. What's going on? Please help

While this may be caused by the display itself it could also be caused by the computer hardware.

Phill I noticed it was upgraded from XP to Win7. Was Win7 u[grade adviser ran before to verify any possible issues?

I was waiting to confirm it was the correct machine Ron as Dell only seem to provide XP drivers for the Dimension 9100 , http://www.dell.com/...ome/NoDefaultOS

Yeah that could be a problem unless Vista drivers would work.

Thanks a lot for prompt response. Here's what I have right now (attached). For software the Word 2007, Excel 2007 and Outlook 2007 were installed because there was original ms works purchased with the system. Some original components were changed within the years like mouse, keyboard and one of the CD drives is not working.I know that this computer is old and I need to replace it, but I was stretching my money as far as I could and it was doing the job. If, this is a death sentence to this computer, please advise the inexpensive machine (up to $700) that will last me another 7-8 years. I use this computer to write letters, keep my budget and occasionally to rip a movie or few for my husband. I'm sorry, but I'm not very knowledgeable in computers and I need clear directions to follow. Again, thanks a ton

It is dependent on whether you wish to upgrade this machine further or purchase a new one, upgrading to a spec that will allow you to use the machine for the purposes stated will be less expensive, suggested upgrades include increasing the Ram, upgrading the present 128.00 mb video card and a better PSU (power supply unit) to support the new video card and other hardware.

I sent a reply , but it wanished to somewhere. So, I'll start anew.

With all probability, I'll buy a new machine, because this one might give me some other problems, even after all the upgrades - it is old. Please help me to pick some other computer,if it is not a big imposition. What parameters should I look for that will last me another 7-8 years problem free. I prefer desktop vs. portable. I saw some bundles in BJ's warehouse and Walmart. What brand is better than the other as being more reliable and having better customer service?

I will be happy to help you with choosing a new system, I will also offer you some guidance on things to consider;

You will get more for your money if you build your own.
Most bundle providers use poor quality power supplies to keep costs down, this can cause damage to your other hardware but it is often only realized when the system is out of warranty.
If you already have a non OEM operating system disk that is not being used on another computer you can save $99.99 off the cost of your build.
You may also be able to use some of your present components on a self build which will again reduce costs.

Dear Phillpower,
You scared me to death and I'm a 62 year woman(lol). Firstly, it looks all complicated, and secondly, I don't have any patience for this. Unless you will send me to the person who can build me a system, I'll have to buy ready-made one. But, I greatly appreciate your offer of support. BTW, the only CDs I have are Dell Dimension Resource CD that came with my computer from 2005 and MS Office 2000. Since than a lot changes were made, including win7 for which I don't have a disc

Ok I will look for a good bundle that is available to be delivered directly to you, you may however need to install Word 2007, Excel 2007 and Outlook 2007 etc on your new computer.

It seems that Acer machine will work for me even though it has only 300w vs 480w for the IBuyPower. Also, it has a VGA connector vs DVI. My current monitor has VGA, but what will happen in the future? I have read somewhere that DVI is the future. Is this correct? Is there an adapter if I'll get a DVI monitor? and all together what is better? i could not figure out what is Aser's video card memory speed?

And,the most important question: if you would have to make a choice, what would you pick? This is very important, because you know computers and I don't. So, what would be your choice? Btw, I do not and never will play games, but it nice to have power for the future and the rest of my needs you know already.
