It's my mom's laptop, so I'm not familiar with all of the specs on it. As far as I know, it is running Windows 7, I think it was up to date with SP1, and I'm fairly certain it's 32-bit. She had been having trouble with getting constantly redirected to other pages while surfing the web and similar problems, so I ran Malwarebytes and it cleaned up around thirty different items (I don't recall what they were exactly, ranged from registry keys to files with trojans and other sorts of malware). I then installed my Norton Internet Security 2012 on her computer and when it finished the install, I got the 5013,3 error (I do believe) and so I ran Norton Power Eraser as it suggested. It found four bad results, only three of which I could act upon. I don't remember the names of the results, I'm sorry about that. After it found those and started the restart sequence, Norton found some trojan that it couldn't delete on its own, but I couldn't do anything because the restart pushed on ahead. When I booted back up it brought me to the screen saying that Windows was unable to load and suggested it may be a hardware change, etc. I had the two options of starting windows repair or starting windows normally. I don't have a safe mode option. Starting normally very briefly flashed a blue screen for an instant then brought me back to the same two options. Starting repair was unable to fix the problem as system restore did not work. I greatly appreciate any help. Thanks in advance. I'll gladly follow whatever advice given and answer any questions to the best of my ability. Also, I don't know if it is important, but I tried to run the Norton Bootable Recovery Tool, but it couldn't find any restore points to reverse whatever NPE erased. I thought it may have been a boot record or something of that nature, so I tried rebuilding the MBR with Partition Wizard, but it didn't have any noticable effect.

Hi this is the third one I have come across now

Reboot your computer and tap the F10 key until Edit Boot Options screen appears
Write down everything and report to me or just take a pic and show me the pic.

Yep same problem

  • Reboot your computer and tap the F10 key until Edit Boot Options screen appears
  • Remove the /minint part by deleting it then press enter to accept the changes
  • See if you can boot into normal Windows (if not let me know and end this session)
  • If so restart and see if you are still able to boot into Windows
  • If you get the BSOD again do the following (if not proceed to OTL):
  • Go back to the Edit Boot Options screen
  • delete /minint and press enter
  • Boot into normal Windows
  • Immediately do the following
  • Click Start Menu --> All Programs --> Accessories
  • Right click on Command prompt and click Run as Administrator
  • Type the following line and press Enter. (Note : the brackets are NOT [ ] but { }, also note the spaces)
    bcdedit /set {default} winpe no
  • Restart and see if you are still able to boot into Windows (if not let me know otherwise proceed to OTL)

OTL

Download OTL to your Desktop
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
    Posted Image
  • Select All Users
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    services.*
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    qmgr.dll
    /md5stop
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\BITS /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Post both logs

It's scanning. I had to restart as I noticed that not all of the custom scan was pasted correctly. Shouldn't take too long.

Alright. Sorry I took so long. I think I did everything correctly. Here are the OTL, Combofix, and AdwCleaner log files. As far as I can tell the computer seems to be running fine. It still boots into windows fine. Boot time seems normal or better than before. I'm not getting redirected to other pages or being bothered by popup ads. I did have to do the restart you suggested after Combofix created the log file, but other than that everything seems normal.

One final run to sweep for orphans then I feel it may be time to tidy up and send you on your way

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the "x" and "/") then click OK

    Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Go to control panel
  • Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

I followed all of your steps. Everything seems to be working fine. I ran a full scan through Norton Internet Security because I was still getting some auto-protect popups and it found five results; two virus, three tracking cookies. It resolved all five issues. I ran Malwarebytes afterwards to be sure everything was clear and it didn't come up with any infected objects. I've attached both logs in case they are important. I'll make sure to post back later if I have any trouble. I really want to thank you! You've been incredibly helpful through the whole process and you saved us from having to send this computer in for repair. :notworthy: I really appreciate it! My mom wanted me to thank you for her as well! :spoton: Thanks Again!
