database error message

when trying to alter a record on my database over the network, i get this error message
tblDocMain:Cannot modify a read-only dataset
I guess it has something to do with read/write permissions but I can't see where the problem is.
I have previously been able to alter the records.
I have tried moving it onto the server we are trialing (its a win8 Server RC) but still have the same issue.
anyone one have any ideas?

we are running various versions of Win7

any thoughts would be appreciated
