Hello!

I am putting this post here at the suggestion of Major Payne :D(thank you, Major!!!)

Have Windows XP Prof. SP 2
Pentium III
D-Link DI-624 router
cable connection provided by Cebridge.net

Trying to go to hotmail log-in and other sites, receive:
"page cannot be displayed" (IE)
"cannot find server " ( Mozilla Firefox)
"Action Canceled" or "Page cannot be displayed" (Smart Explorer, evaluation version)

Sites that cannot be accessed:

microsoft sites, except the microsoft homepage loads
microsoft updates
hotmail.com, hotmail.msn.com
pcpitstop
ebay except homepage loads
dell, all sites!
msn.com works sometimes
walmart.com
msn.com works sometimes :help:

Windows Inst. Messenger doesn't work. MS reports that it cannot do troubleshooting

:D

So I tried a lot of stuff, ok? Here's most of it:

Remote assistance does not work.
says messenger not installed! (has been working fine or my 16-yr old daughter would have mutinied on me long ago) Link for installing brings up error page (page cannot be displayed)

Cannot Windows XP restore to any available date !! :help:

Direct connected modem, did not go through router, makes no difference.:)

Secure sites work ok :help:

ISP walked me through a settings check, including LAN settings. took me through pings, ipconfig renew, resetting modem and router.

ISP is Cebridge.net and they had an outage here May 15 right about the same time as when the problems started. COINCIDENCE???

Cebridge sent out a tech who checked the connection with his computer and said the problem lies in some setting somewhere within the bowels of my computer. He said let him know what the problem is when I find it!
;)

Did these:
did netsh int reset all and ipconfig/flushdns

Tried "automatically detect settings"

Told tools-options that the sites were trusted sites

Tried disabling all of the following:
Content advisor (remains disabled)
Norton Anti-Virus in Systemworks 2003 (remains disabled)
WindowsFirewall, currently enabled
Microsoft Anti-spyware real-time protection, currently enabled
Spyware Dr OnGuard
Disabled all at once, too!
:tazz: :tazz: ;)

Javascript enabled
SSL 2.0 and 3.0 are checked

No restrictions found under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Policies/Microsoft/Internet Explorer

only 2 items there:
(Default) value = REG_SZ
Homepage value = REG_DWORD

Preparation
Ran the WinSockFix utility even though I can connect.

DL'd and ran CleanUp!, which I initially thought would be superfluous, seeing as how MS has the disk cleanup utikity over there in accessories/system tools. Wow, lots of other stuff there came off like all those IE temp items. Thank you for a great utility!

Step One: Scan for Spyware/Adware
Well, I have already scanned with PC Cillin (since uninstalled) Spybot, Spyware DR and MS Antispyware beta version. IE plug in keeps coming back.
Ad-aware SE -Had this long ago and re-installed the latest version, then did updates.
All settings as recommended in your must_read_this_before_posting

Saved the log file but is not posted here.

Marked everything for removal and supposedly got rid of it.

CWShredder Cool Web Search was not found :)

Have had Spybot for years now. Updated, ran scan.

Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites. Did not recognize any to
be on my computer..

Ewido Security Suite - did not do. Have Norton System Works 2003 with virus definition updates subscription till this fall. However, they have stopped supporting the product and making updates!!! Stinkers!! I paid for another year on that thing!
;) :P

Trend Housecall - did this scan. No viruses.:)

Panda Activescan - did this scan. No viruses.:)

AVG Well, dear Geeks, what do you think? chuck Norton and get this one???? :help:

TDS-3 - DL's and scanned. No trojans.

Step Three: Windows Updates
Well, this is one of the sites that I cannot access (page cannot be displayed) but prior to my problems I had automatic updates, so I shouldn't be out of date.

Step Four: Reboot - Test
Not working yet.

:o
