Hello Again.

First problem is, my desktop icon takes forever to open.
Sometimes I have to click on the icon, Yahoo or Google, etc., several times before
it decides to open. It takes about five minuets to open an icon.
Than when It does open, it takes a few clicks for me to get into something else.

Second problem is,when I get into a page to read, the page keeps jumping.
I will scroll down to look at something in the middle of the page,
and the page will jump back to the top,
or jump up where I would have to scroll back down.

Is there any way I can be helped with these two issues??

Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.

Hello john god

A while back I had a family member with a similar issue.
They were on an Optiplex as well.

The cause of the problem turned out to be the Primary IDE ATA Controller
for the hard drive being set to PIO (Programmed input/output) only mode.

Rather than DMA (Direct Memory Access) if available mode, which is ideal.

Not trying to complicate things, just another possibility.

If rshaffer61 sees fit, either he or myself can explain how to check this setting.

ok I need you to do the following and let me know what it says



For HD only



Let's make sure all drives are using DMA mode

Click the Start and then Right click My Computer
Select Manage and In the Computer Management window, select Device Manager
In the right pane, click to expand IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
The click on the + sign next to your Hard drive controllers on both the Primary Controller and Secondary Controller
Right click on the drive and select Properties
Click the Advanced Settings tab
In the Transfer Mode box open the drop down menu and select DMA if available
Redo the steps to check each of the Controllers
Click OK and exit all windows
Reboot to make sure all settings take affect. Reply back with your results

Did the DMA part first. No change. Now doing Autoruns.

Let me know if I did this right?

OK John you are killing me here with all these autoruns.
I'm sure this is going to be part of your issue from what I am seeing.


Open Autoruns, click on "Logon" tab, and UN-check:

+ "Adobe ARM"
+ "NeroFilterCheck"
+ "QuickTime Task"
+ "SunJavaUpdateSched"
+ "Advanced SystemCare 5" Please uninstall this as it is a pain in the rear anymore.
+ "ctfmon.exe"
+ "MSMSGS"
+ "swg" "GoogleToolbarNotifier" "Google Inc."





When done restart computer and then:



Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

• Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
• It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
• Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
• Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged
Please do not run any other Auslogics programs other then this one as they may cause unwanted results.

When I first go on it.

I have one question I needed to mention.

Back when I did the IDE ATA ATAPI Controllers
Primary-Device 0 Current Transfer Mode Ultra DMA Mode 5
Device 1 Current Transfer Mode Not Applicable

Secondary-Device 0 Current Transfer Mode PLO Mode
Device 1 Current Transfer Mode PLO Mode

Both Transfer Mode Had DMA if available
But both Current Transfer Mode didn't have a drop down box.

Does this matter?

In short NO
Primary device 0 is your HDD and that is the one that should be DMA
Direct Memory Access - quicker way of writing data than PIO - Programmed Input Output


Secondary device PIO more than likely a CD drive
