I've got Windows 7, 64-bit with Norton Internet security. Norton has removed some Trojans but is unable to fix my services.exe. I've also tried Malware Bites, and super anti-spyware, all in safe mode and normal mode. No joy.

My otl.txt file is attached.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

You said that after I run the script through otl that I should do another quick scan and post the results here. But I need to wait to hear back from you from the second quick scan before proceeding with ComboFix? Also I noticed that the script you provide concluded with "reboot". I'm presuming it will automatically reboot my machine. I have been running these programs in safe mode off of a flash drive. When the reboot occurs, should I go back to safe mode or should I let it boot normally? Should ComboFix be run from the flash drive in safe mode or is it safe to reboot the machine in normal mode when installing Combo Fix and running it?

Run the first OTL fix from safe mode and the rest from normal mode

Then run everything in sequence only posting the logs when completed

I went ahead and ran everything in the order that you said without waiting for this recent reply from you. I did run OTL in safe mode and the others in normal mode. Everything seemed to go okay. Norton, Malware Bites, and Super Anti-Spyware all say that the system is clean. I will be sending you a donation by PayPal. Here the log files just for grins. By the way there is a new folder _otl on my flash drive. Are those okay to delete?

Out of curiosity… What is your process? Do you run these log files through some sort of program or do you have to eyeball them and create the repair scripts by hand? Whatever you do it's magic. It's been very rare that I've ever had something that Malware Bites and/or super anti-spyware could not remove. Norton does a fine enough job of blocking attacks and warning you about things that I've never been impressed with their removal tools. That's why I keep the others handy. If I ever get another bad one I know where to go now.

Here are the log files.

It is all manual initially to determine what the infection is. Then a determination of what can be removed manually and what will need a dedicated tool to remove needs to be made..From thereon in easy peasy

By the way there is a new folder _otl on my flash drive. Are those okay to delete

Yes you can manually delete that one..

Thanks for the donation

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall (Notice the space between the "x" and "/") then click OK

    Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Go to control panel
  • Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

I usually run Malware Bites periodically. As well as Super Anti-Spyware just as an extra step above and beyond my usual Norton. Will continue to do so.

Thanks for the tip on the File Hippo. I'd seen other such services but they were all paid. Good to see there's a free one available.

Again thanks for all of your help.
