The enemy: trojan.downloader.ConHook.d

The Victim: Dell Deminsions 3000 w/ Windows XP Home Ed.

The Idiot: Me--My McAfee Firewall subscription lapsed and I was slothfull about getting it renewed. Now I'm paying the price.

The rundown of my thus-far futile attempts to get rid of the trojan:

* Nortons 2005 found the infection, but couldn't remove the trojan...

* I loaded Ad-Aware SE--it couldn't get it off...

* I turned off Nortons and loaded Ewido--Ewido found it, but couldn't get it either...

* I loaded TDS-3--it couldn't even find the trojan(even when I scanned the specific file directly)...

* I loaded Killbox and procexp, but I didn't know which files to kill...

* I loaded and ran Cleanup40--it relieved some of the load on the CPU. Now there is only a 70% load on the CPU instead of a 90% load.

I'm waving up the white flag.

Actually, the virus is dead! (Thank the Lord!)

Since I really couldn't do anything with my computer b/c the virus was hogging all the RAM, I browsed all of the posts where your team had helped others with similar trojans. I ended up using Pocket Killbox and procexp in safemode to corner and kill the virus threads followed by hijackthis and cleanup40 to expunge it. I wasn't expecting it to work, but the next time I rebooted in safe mode, I wan hijack this and it said the "gebcc.dll" file (the virus) was missing! That was the June 7th--and my cpu has been running smooth as silk since!

All thanks to the GTG staff for the detailed assistance it gives to the members b/c all I did was follow various instructions I found in other posts, and also thanks to GTG for making so much powerful software available!

Would you take a look at this log? It says the gebcc.dll file is "Missing". It's not just hiding out, is it?

Hi gniweb,

Just a liitle left to do on your log.

Reboot your pc into SAFE MODE by tapping the F8 key hilst your PC boots up, select Safe Mode option.

Rescan with HJT and check the following entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {8E13DDE1-E013-47ec-9C4C-27C2F78BDD26} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gebcc.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: gebcc - gebcc.dll (file missing)

Also if you or system administrator have not set up policies in internet explorer, then also check the following entry:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked.

Rebot PC nrmally, rescan with HJT and pst the lg back.
