Hi folks I m a big dumb animal when it comes to computers .. i don t know much just that I did take all the steps for hijack this forum as mentioned on this site ... i run spybot, adaware, and spysweeper at least twice weekly .. and mcafee internet suite from 2004 (not sure what build) the computer is a month old very stable BUT keeping coming up with "A better internet" from spysweeper .. the first time it was in ... temp folder? i think .. and the last two times it has found traces showing as registry keys? i m pretty much a child when it comes to this stuff ... here s my hijack this log ... give me a clue? and thanks ... also maybe some help on removing invalid keys from installed then uninstalled programs .. mcaffee for instance .. uninstalled it and then reinstalled but there are invalid keys in teh registry now .. i m afraid to do anything but would like to shrink up the registry a bit ...

Hi HungryBob and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

Your HiJackThislog looks clean.

I would like you to do a few more things to ensure this though.

Download and install and run CleanUp! Here

You say you would like to clean up your registry, try this:

*Please dowload: RegSeeker.
*Click on "Clean The Registry" in the left panel.
*Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
*After it runs, click "Select All" on the bottom, then right-click on any selected item in the window and select "Delete Selected Items".
*Click "Quit RegSeeker".

Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run the RegSeeker again, do the same thing again if anything is found. When RegSeeker finds nothing else, then it's clean!

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Please post an Active scan log and a fresh HiJackThis log

Thanks,

:tazz:

thank you for the welcome.

the cleanup cleared quite a bit of stuff ... almost 100mgs. Not sure what it all was but it s gone now lol.

about the registry; I ve been using regsupreme on it and this is odd. I got the computer about 5 weeks ago from Dell. It was a manager s special so it could have been like a refurb or a return.. who knows. But anyway, regsupreme deleted 800 probs in the registry. That is quite a bit of stuff.
To add to the intrigue, your regseek found another 600 itself after about 3 dozen scans. the last dozen scans or so had a few recurring no matter how many times I deleted them.... pointer s to update logs for mcafee i believe.

I ran active scan and could not figure out how to save a logfile .. although I do have the basic report that it gave directly following the scan .. I will post that now then explain the odd thing that happened with hijackthis.

Active Scan:

Incident Status Location

Adware:Adware/SaveNow No disinfected Windows Registry

Now about Hijackthis. When I ran it to give you an update logfile, near the beginning of the scan, 4 errors popped up back to back after I clicked okay. I clicked OK thinking I could just run it again to see the errors again to save them here for you to see. I was mistaken because when I ran it again they did not pop up. So here is the scan first that was saved when the errors occurred and folowing that in gray will be the scan that I logged following that, when errors did not occur; maybe you can see a difference.
"Errors" Scan:

Hi HungryBob,

How is your computer running? When you McAfee is running, does the Red M show up in the tray down by the clock? Or is it a black M?

1. Open HiJack and do a scan.

2. Put a Check next to the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.4.2_03) -

3. click the Fix Checked box

4. Try these 2 online scans and see if you can post the results:
HouseCall
Kaspersky

Also please post a new HiJack This log.

Hi Ex, sorry for the late response. I have been very busy this weekend with bbq's and great weather.

The computer runs great. I'm just a worry wart I think. I also like to keep my registry clean because I know a lot of issues start there with invalid entries etc.

What was that piece of Adware that Active Scan found and how are we resolving that?

The Mcafee "M" is red in the taskbar. I was having some issues with the security center (Mcafee) when I first registered and installed it. I uninstalled a portion of it and reinstalled and registered it. I check with my Mcafee very often so I know it is performing as expected.

I 'fixed' the three items in Hijackthis that you directed me to fix.

The housecall scan from trend micro found nothing. Results were clean .. again couldn t figure out how to log a result.

As far as Kapersky .. it's a deep scan but a godawful long one. Took over 2 and a half hours to scan; granted it did find my cracksearcher as malicious as well as another file. Because I cannot figure out how to do a log I will type it out. I will leave the Kapersky java scan open until tomorrow when I get direction from you Ex. Also, I had to disable my Mcafee Active Shield (as directed by Kapersky) to do the scan. I was uncomfortable leaving it down that long.

File Name - C:\Program Files\Cracksearcher\Cracksearcher.exe
Virus Name - HackTool.Win32.Cracksearch.a

File Name - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ActiveScan\imscan.dll
Virus Name - Virus.DOS.Terronia.2538

Total nbr of scanned objects - 39139
nbr of viruses found - 2
nbr of infected objects found - 2
nbr of suspicious objects found - 0
Scan Duration - 9483.969 seconds

I really don t believe that Cracksearcher is malicious; I use it for testing purposes only and I really don t want to have to delete it. I have had it on my last 2 machines and it (I don t believe) ever caused any problems.
As far as the second item ... that looks like something I was told to download here .. so that confuses me ........

As I said before, I will leave that Kapersky applet open until I get direction from you; my Mcafee shield is enabled once again but if you direct me to do anything through this Kapersky applet, I will disable.

Hi HungryBob,

With all those BBQ's maybe you should change your name to "notsohungrybob" ;)

From what I can see your log looks clean. As far as that registry entry goes, i can suggest a registry cleaner below.

How is you computer running?

This entry: R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html

Did you want that as your main search page? I am not familiar with that, but I believe Dell forces that on their computer buyers.

I think it would serve you well to clean your registry!

Thanks,

:tazz:

Hi Ex,
it doesn t matter how much bbq I eat there s always room for more :tazz:

you may have forgotten as I realize you are quite busy helping a lot of people but I did do the regseek as suggested by you yesterday or the day before. There were a few recurring entries that kept coming up no matter how many times they were fixed (or removed). But I will do it again.

Yes you are correct - MyWay is a Dell forced search engine that I don t mind having because it utilizes many search engines at a time .. AskGeeves, Google, Yahoo, etc.

I have a HUGE concern though that we haven t directly dealt with the adware :

Active Scan:

Incident                                    Status                    Location

Adware:Adware/SaveNow      No disinfected          Windows Registry

from the June 12 1:53 AM post

nor have we dealt with the infected file and virus:

File Name - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ActiveScan\imscan.dll
Virus Name - Virus.DOS.Terronia.2538

from the June 13 1:06AM post.

of course I am not the computer expert and I may be wrong in that assumption lol as I quite often am ... I will go run regseek now and then repost letting you know how things went .. please get back to me though on how we already have or are going to deal with those 2 problems. Thanks a bunch Excal!

Hi Bob,

I am the same way about BBQ....lol

Imscan.dll file comes with Pandas Active Scan and is the anti-virus scanning engine(which we first ran). I should have told you that before, sorry about that.

Active Scan:

Incident                                    Status                    Location

Adware:Adware/SaveNow      No disinfected          Windows Registry

The SaveNow registry entry is leftover and will not harm your system at all because there are no associated files. There is absolutely no way to find the entry because it's randomly generated with each installation.

But its time to rest my brain....lol, have work in 4 hours ;)

Let me know about those other reg entries.

Best,

:tazz:

Thanks for your help, I feel bad that you have to work so early and are up so late helping me.

As for that panda entry .. I may have made a goof .. I had Kapersky remove it. If there is a way to remedy that I m sure you ll let me know.

As for the other registry entries - yesterday when I had a few recurring I just decided to add them to the 'exclusions' and be done with it. Now that I look at how to unexclude them I am quite confused and not sure how. Other than that, I had to disconnect from the internet to do the regseek and get clean. Tonight the recurring entries were "path doesn t exist" pointing to Mcafee update logs that were time stamped the same time I rebooted the system .. deleted them .. ran regseek again .. more of the same except timestamped at the time i rebooted the system that time .. you get the idea .. everytime i rebooted, the mcafee would make a pointer to an update log and so on.... after disconnecting the modem , running regseek, deleting, restarting system, running regseek again - it was clean - EXCEPT for what I excluded last night and cannot figure out how to INclude now ... lol what a mess I am.

Other than that, machine runs fine (I think) :tazz:

Thanks again Ex.

Bob,

If you excluding those items did not do anything to your computer, I would not worry about them. If i am reading it correctly they are items with paths do not exsit, well if thats the case, then its ok :tazz:

As far as the Panda item goes, no big deal at all. All it is is the active scan engine, which you can get again by going to that active scan link.

I never had to "include" something back into Regseeker, so let me play with it and I will come up with something...lol

McAfee...hmmm. I used to have Red Security Suite and pay my $10 bucks a month, up until I started learing about Spyware. I was amazed how many virsues were aimed at and were successfull in Disabling McAfee. Now this is not a knock on McAfee (and I am not in the job of promoting any other product), I just wanted to tell you about my thoughts and experiences.
I now use the AVG free edition virus and Sygate free firewall, and I haven't had one problem with either one.

Don't feel bad for me, if I didn't enjoy helping people out, I wouldn't stay up late ;)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.
Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE

Spybot S&D

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest this Free program:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4

Spywareguard

IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 2 good free versions:

Sygate

ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox

Opera

This site is a great source for tightening up security on Internet Explorer settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
