Hi folks! I've found great help in this forum before, and I would dearly appreciate your help again. We're putting together a computer which will be used to both play heavily animated video games, but more importantly it will be used to edit audio and video. Right now we've been editing video on a Mac, but we need a heavier-duty machine that won't take forever to render the video. SO, without further ado, the parts list:

COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Advanced RC-932-KKN5-GP Black Steel ATX Full Tower

Motherboard
ASUS Rampage IV Extreme LGA 2011 Intel X79 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Extended ATX Intel Motherboard

Thank you for your reply and answers to the questions.

Given the software you are using, tried to configure the highest performing build, keeping as close to your budget as possible. Could only include 3 HDDs, 7 would be optimal using onboard controllers, (add when budget allows) It also lacks a card reader and Fire-wire.

Thanks for the update Georgia Peach.

We would be very interested in seeing your proposed specifications.

Some info.

Should you build the system yourself, it will need to be stress tested to make sure it is stable. Loaded with your software. The OS optimized, and tested again for stability. I advise keeping your existing work computer operational until you are fully satisfied with the performance of you new one.

The GPU I suggested is a consumer card with a standard warranty. If you decide on a professional GPU like a Quadro, usually more expensive, it would come with a full support service included in the price.

As it is a work environment, an option may be to take your specification to a system builder where they would build, bench test and optimize and offer a service agreement as well.

If we can be of any further help, please post.

Regards.

Hi iammykyl:

I have a question about the motherboard (based on the reviews). Apparently a CPU cooler that is of a certain size will block the first PCIe slot. Do you know if the cooler specified (Nocturn NH-D14, which is something like I haven't seen before :) will block that slot or no? It sits up, but it looks seriously huge.

Thanks!

Please make sure that you select the correct cooler for the socket you may use. The GA-X79-UP4 socket 2011 (in my specs) is currently not on the list as it is only just released, you would need to contact Noctua support.

The hight of the RAM is also important for clearance.

Okay -- we've updated our specs (thanks for the link to pcpartpicker btw). It's mostly the same as you suggested, but we've added a monitor as well. When you have time, please take a look and give your assessment.

The latest specs

Thanks again!!

Thanks again iammykyl for that note on compatibility. We've been discussing what we'd need and spec'ing out. Here's the final "perfect" version:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/h6VZ

However, it's priced around $2200, so I tried going in and changing some things. What I came up with is around $1800. My question at this point would be -- are we losing performance/durability by going with the less expensive version? Here it is:

I can't thank you enough for all the time and advice you are giving us! :notworthy:
