Hmmm ... I bought this computer with XP already installed and never received a CD copy of XP. Is this tutorial a lost effort unless I have an XP CD?

I thought you said you had an XP CD

Oh well what is the make and model of the computer, it may have a recovery partition

I have found two possible options for that system : Could you try both and let me know the result of the key presses

When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.

Turn on the computer, after the Dell Logo appears and then disappears repeatedly press the <F8> key until you see the Advanced Boot Options menu.

ok, 1st option went to a black screen for a moment and I didnt catch what it said and then would not go still went to blue screen, option 2 brought up the boot menu

Was there an advanced boot option ?

its called the windows advanced option menu

That is it if you select that ther should be several options .. What are they ? One should be to revert the system to factory settings

Options are
Safemode
Safemode with networking
Safemode with command prompt
Enable boot logging
Enable vga mode
Last known good configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory services restore mode (windows domain controllers only)
Debugging mode
Disable automatic restart on system failure
Start windows normally
Reboot
Return to os choices menu

Hmm no recovery option there, could you select last known good and see if that restarts it

Unfortunately it looks as though we will need an XP disc so that we can attempt a repair install.. Are you able to borrow one ?
