I see from reading past topics there are lots of people with this problem, ie a laptop keyboard (with me its a dELL) where the typing skips up a couple of lines or sometimes just deletes the lot. This can cause confusion when filling in forms with the possibility of serious errors dealing with finances. I am a fast accrate typist and have bought a mouse to see if that solves it - it doesn't.
I see you seem to think this is some kind of malware - how would I go about getting rid of it?
(ps I am reasonably computer savvy, but at age 70+ need plain English not computer-speak).

Hello BBarb,

Welcome to Geekstogo.

I see you seem to think this is some kind of malware

May not be malware but let's have a look and see what we can find.

(ps I am reasonably computer savvy, but at age 70+ need plain English not computer-speak).

Just ask if anything doesn't make sense to you. :)

Now

  • Download OTL to your desktop.
  • Double click on the OTL icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan box paste this in:
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    %systemdrive%\$Recycle.Bin|@;true;true;true
    /md5start
    services.*
    explorer.exe
    winlogon.exe
    Userinit.exe
    svchost.exe
    qmgr.dll
    /md5stop
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan won't take long.
When the scan completes, it will open a notepad window. OTL.Txt. This is saved in the same location as OTL.

Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents post back here.

Oh dear, here I go already - you say download it to my desktop - er, how do you do that? Usually when I see something like that I click 'run' but that doesn't work as it tells me to download it to desktop. I presume that means its going to go on the page I see when I first switch on the computer - the one with the icons on it? How do I get it there when the options are 'run, save'?
Sorry to be so thick.

Thats an awful lot of data!
The laptop I use once belonged to my daughter so I assume thats why she's listed as admin (HeatherJ is daughter, my name is Barbara) we thought we'd cleared everything of hers(!) obviously we hadn't. It took almost an hour to scan - is that normal?

Hello again BBarb,

Nothing serious there just a little bit of cleaning up which we will attend to.

How do I get it there when the options are 'run, save'?

I was sound asleep when you posted this... looks like you worked things out though. ;)

Yes it can take a while. :)

Now

Download AdwCleaner from here to your desktop
Run AdwCleaner and select Delete

Posted Image

Once done it will ask to reboot, allow this
On reboot a log will be produced please attach that

After that

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

So when you return please post
  • AdwCleaner report
  • Malwarebytes log

I've spent all morning trying to find a 'download' button to click without success - the only thing would be Firefox, do you mean me to install that? When I click the green arrow on the right I'm told that 'adwcleaner.exe is unsafe and was blocked by SmartScreen Filter'. Also I see you're in NZ whilst I'm in UK so there's going to be a time lapse between communications.
Thank you for your patience - its mostly the language that defeats me.

Hello again Barbara,

I will do my best to be here at times you can get me.

Yes it can be confusing... just ask me if you are unsure though. I don't mind. ;)

I've spent all morning trying to find a 'download' button to click without success

It's the blue lettering "Click here to download AsCleaner" - turns green when you move your curser over it. Then on the next page it is the big green downward facing arrow on the right.

I'm told that 'adwcleaner.exe is unsafe and was blocked by SmartScreen Filter

I think that is your Windows security program thinking that adwcleaner is suspicious so is blocking it. It's okay though so we need to disable SmartScreen Filter to let it download.

When the SmartScreen window comes up click on More Options

Click on the Run Anyway option

Tell me if you still have problems. :)

Hello Goodmorning (its 8.30pm here)
Sadly I'm not offered more options, there's just a little strip of dialogue along the bottom of the screen. I can click 'View Downloads' but it doesn't respond, or I can clcik 'learn more' which gives me promotion details. I've tried to copy the little strip but can't highlight it or copy to send it to you - btw your images were just those little red Xs. Should I go to Chaen? nge or Uninstms and uninstall Smartscreall Program(its done it again - all the typing's gone awry. That was meant to be should I UNINSTALL smartscreen and then reinstall it later.) though the thought of that worries me!

No we won't pursue that one just now.

Sadly I'm not offered more options

Well that one must be the SmartScreen in Internet Explorer 9 rather than the Windows stand a lone SmartScreen.

Try this: :)

Click the Start button (left bottom of your screen). In the search box, type Internet Explorer, and then, in the list of results, click Internet Explorer.

Click the Safety button, point to SmartScreen Filter, and then click either Turn Off SmartScreen Filter or Turn On SmartScreen Filter.

In the Microsoft? SmartScreen Filter dialog box, click OK.

Further to my last post.

Actually when I try that on my machine I find it a bit confusing. This might be an easier way:

To turn the SmartScreen Filter on or off, follow these steps:

  • Open your Internet Explorer
  • Click the Tools icon (top right - looks a bit like a wheel), and then click Safety.
  • Click one of the following items:
  • Turn On SmartScreen Filter
  • Turn Off SmartScreen Filter

In the Microsoft SmartScreen Filter dialog box, select one of the following items, and then click OK:
  • Turn on SmartScreen Filter (recommended)
  • Turn off SmartScreen Filter

Slow slow slow - but I got there in the end. It got so late I had to go to bed and leave it scanning, its now 8.30am here and I'm getting ready for work (yes I still work) but here's the report from the scan - which seems fine. When I return you'll be tucked up in bed but I'll log in again tonight. By the way I have Windows 7.
