A few days ago I noticed that my browser had gotten hijacked. It took over my home page, wouldnt let me go to the mincrosoft site, I did the pre-posting steps you suggested, and various bits of malware were detected and removed. Everything seems pretty good, except for one remaining thing: at startup I get this balck screen with a message saying something like, "danger, spyware" and a whole bunch of stuff about needing to address this.. and the "removal instructions" link to some ad for something called AntiVirus Gold.
I can see at shutdown that the jpeg that is my original wallpaper is still there, just behind this thing. I got the name of the black screen file (desktop.html) and tried deleting it, but them my desktop was unstable, oscillating between a white and grey background (with all the normal icons there -- things worked, but the desktop sort of blinked as it changed colors, so I restoered that black screen file.) According to the display controls in Control panel, my wallpaper is still the original jpeg, but this thing stays on top of it.
OS is Windows XP, by the way.
