I just downloaded runscanner beginner and have joined up to get some expert help. Please bear in mind that i'm a complete novice.

to speed up my old laptop on start up

OK not the best program for that. I suggest first off uninstalling this program because you can accidentally uninstall or delete something you need causing your system to become unbootable.
Secondly can you provide some info on your laptop like the following.

• If a name brand system then what brand, make and model is the system?
• Total memory installed
• Total hard drive capacity and free space
• What was the original issue
• What steps have you taken so far to resolve the issue
• Is the issue only during startup or does it happen after you are in Windows or online?

Thirdly please do the following.

Download Autoruns from the link in my signature below:

1: Extract the Autoruns Zip file contents to a folder.
2: Double-click the "Autoruns.exe".
3: Click on the "Everything" tab
4: Remove any entries that mention "File Not Found" by right-clicking the entry and select Delete.
5: Go to File then to Export As or Save in some versions.
6: Save AutoRuns.txt file to known location like your Desktop.
7: Attach to your next reply.

Ok, I couldn't find runscanner in control panel add/remove programs. I opened it from desktop but it looked too scary to go any further.How do i uninstall?

Not sure if this is the correct data you requested, I hope so it took me ages to find it.

The original issue was trying to speed up my laptop by deleting all unwanted/obsolete programs. It's slow on startup but seems ok in windows (I'm not expecting miracles I know its old).

So far I have defragged, done a disk cleanup and downloaded and used Ccleaner on its most basic setting (Analyse & run cleaner). Ive also backed up my personal files and deleted the lot.
I've got to admit to not really having a clue about what i'm doing. I followed instructions from forums for all of the above and they seem to have worked ok.

I should mention that i'm totally new to computers/internet so apologies in advance if I have to ask for you to explain things in idiot proof terms (like how to click on the link in your signature)

Try revo uninstaller to get rid of runscanner.

Download and install Revo Uninstaller

• Double click the Revo Uninstaller icon on your desktop to start the program
• Scroll through the listed programs and Right Click on the program you wish to uninstall
• From the pop out menu choose Uninstall
• Click Yes to the confirmation dialogue
• In the next window select the Advanced mode
• Click Next to start uninstalling the program
• Answer Yes to confirm the uninstall
• When the program has completed the four steps, click Next to allow the program to search for leftovers
• Once complete, click Next, then Finish
• Repeat the above steps for any other programs you wish to remove.

I do not see your Autoruns.txt log attached per my last instructions so I am hoping you are still working on that.

Thre is little doubt, and I am sure my colleague will agree, that one of your major problems is this

The accepted minimum REALLY adequate ram for a smooth running system on XP is 1GB
You can see that you have only 66MB of physical ram free.

A real difference would be noticable my increasing the ram

I would agree but the actual free space on the hd along with the autoruns right now is something that we need to see.
Along with the autoruns.txt log I requested can you also please do the following.



Go to Start then to Run
Type in compmgmt.msc and click Enter
On left side click on Disk Management
On right side you will see you hard drive.
Male sure the window is open all the way on the top right so I can see all the info it has.
Now I need you to take a screenshot and attach it to your next reply. Do the following to take a screenshot while the above is open and showing on your desktop.

To do a screenshot please have click on your Print Screen on your keyboard. It is normally the key above your number pad between the F12 key and the Scroll Lock key
Now go to Start and then to All Programs
Scroll to Accessories and then click on Paint
In the Empty White Area click and hold the CTRL key and then click the V
Go to the File option at the top and click on Save as
Save as file type JPEG and save it to your Desktop
Make sure the window is open all the way so I can see everything on the top right window.

Thanks for all your input so far.
I had to go for a walk cos my head was exploding from too much info. My learning curve has gone from horizontal to vertical!
So far I've downloaded revo uninstaller and that is not showing runscanner in the list.
I tried following your instructions for autruns txt log but think i screwed up somewhere because when I tried to attach the file i got a red error message saying i wasn't authorised to upload this kind of file.

I agree with both you and macboatmaster that i need more ram. That was further down my list of things to do, after I had attemted to clean up this old thing and learn how to use it.

Hope I've attached screenshot correctly and could you advise what might of gone wrong with autoruns txt log?

Re Autoruns
When you click on file and save. if you look it saves it by default as autoruns.data on file type, click the drop arrow to the right of that box and select text
then copy and paste from where you save

Free space is not the issue.
Autoruns look good also.

Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

• Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
• It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
• Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
• Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

As for TFC, this is a tidbit of an article I found a while back by a MicroSoft MVP.

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB).

Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running applications. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.
-- TFC only cleans temp folders.
-- TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail.

Download Auslogics Defrag from the link in my signature below. Auslogics Defrag in my opinion is better because:

It does a more comprehensive job at Defragging
It will actually show you what it is doing
At the end of working it will show you how much speed you picked up
You can view a online log of the files that Auslogics defragged
Please do not run any other Auslogics programs other then this one as they may cause unwanted results.
