White Screen on Startup

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help. My PC appears to start up, with the Windows sign and the Welcome Screen displaying as normal, but then goes completely white. ctrl-alt-del does nothing. Same with "previous configuration that worked". Safe mode w/networking doesn't give me my desktop, but can get to safe mode w/cmd. Any suggestions ... please? Really can't afford a new PC at this stage!
