With respect you are not reading what I am posting carefully enough
You are not answering the points I am making, only some of them.

1. Is system restore turned ON on the C Drive see my post

2. Did you click to SHOW other restore points- it is quite common for it to ONLY show two at the opening
and WHAT were please the two points shown.

3. I KNOW it was OK on chkdsk I said so

HOWEVER did you run the system file check

System Restore is on for C:/, it is not on for D:/ though.

I also saw that my computer had decided to use my WD as the backup drive, so I undid that.

There are more restore points! I didn't even see those! There is one for 3/23/12, one for 7/12/12, and one for 9/10/12 (tonight my time).


I'm afraid I don't understand, what do you mean by the system file check? Is it different from the chkdsk? My hard-drive on my laptop is divided into 2 sectors, C:/ and D:/, and for both chkdsk checks it reported that there were no errors....

Yes system file check is different from chkdsk
Just follow the instructions in my post

then after that has completed go back to cmd and type
sfc /scannow
when that reports errors fixed or no violations found
either run it again if it says there are some errors that cannot be fixed - up to three trimes
then see what the report is
type exit and key enter to leave cmd prompt

that is windows button - type in search
cmd
when it appears above right click and click run as admin
when the cmd window opens, check that the prompt is on a C:\ - drive
and type
sfc /scannow
key enter

I will reply to the drive question point when you have completed the system file check

Oh shoot! I thought I had written that down-yes I ran that scan 3 times, and it found no integrity errors

To eliminate any possible confusion is the WD drive you mention an external drive, not connected when you sent me the disk management screenshot, or are you referring to the partition lettered D

Well what is the restore point 7/12/12 shown as eg critcial update restore point, some other installation restore point etc, and if you were to consider it, remebering that you would lose everything since then if it worked are you willing to try.

If so you can of course backup anything important

It fixed itself!! I don't know how, but when I shut off my computer it had the Windows Updates symbol, and it installed 5 updates, and it must have reinstalled what I accidentally deleted because I tried to re-install Chrome on a whim and it worked!!
