Under applications in the Event Viewer, in the source column, there is a title called "Windows Error Reporting" dated from today most recently. I think though that it is related to the fact that I disabled my virus protection software before trying to create the disks. These are the details listed:

I'm not sure if this is related to anything but these are the two "windows error reporting" topics listed for today.

Sorry i didn't explain correctly what you need to do is to check if on the Event Viewer you have any event with Level Error or Warning inside the Windows Logs \ Applications and Windows Logs \ System around the time the Recovery Media Creator stopped.
When the Recovery Media Creator is at 0% do you have any disk activity?
Does the program stop responding and you have to kill it using task manager?

Please describe the other computer problems you have maybe its related.

Oh I see. Okay the only event around that time under "System" with an error is describing an unexpected shut down which is what I had to do to close the Recovery Manager as it will not allow me to press cancel or even to click the x in the corner of the window (the one in my last screenshot posted) and I thought maybe I needed to restart and try again for it to work properly.

Another thing that doesn't work properly since my computer went through whatever it is that happened, is that Firefox tells me it is already running when I try to open it. I even uninstalled and re-installed it, and checked the task manager to see if it was still somehow running, and though it is not; I haven't been able to use it since.

Also, all of my files (music, pictures, documents) were deleted, but also the folders that came with my computer. For example, the icon that said "My Pictures" in my library no longer exists and I had to create a new one. Also the "My Music" and "My Documents" folders/icons.

As for under "Application" there are several events around the time the manager did not work that are level "warning"

The event "Application Virtualization Client" is listed twice as a warning around the time. The first is as follows:

And about disk activity, I'm not sure if there is any occuring while it is at zero percent, but it doesn't seem like the computer is doing anything. I don't hear any noise indicative of activity and nothing moves to show loading, and no messages pop-up telling me that something is happening.

Any recent virus infection?

Lest do a little test please download CatchOutput.zip
Extract the zip file to the desktop and run the CatchOutput program inside
on the text box copy & paste the command:
dir /A /S "%Temp%\smtmp"

The Command Line will flash for a moment and then notepad will open with the result, please post the log on your reply.

I honestly have no idea what caused the issue. I was watching a music video from youtube at the time and my firefox browser closed on its own without any explanation. It concerned me but I thought it was just a random small glitch so I reopened it and about a minute later I got a bunch of error messages and microsoft gave me an option to purchase something online that would help prevent my files from being lost but I chose not to accept and lost everything. I had Microsoft Security Essentials and ran a full scan of my entire system after and it found no malware or viruses :(

This is the result of the CatchOutput program:

Hi guys
Reading through this topic I'm a little confused as to exactly what direction you are trying to take.
System restore takes the system back to a date before a issue started while maintaining all data.
A factory reset will format the drive and put the system back to the way it was brand new from the factory. This will erase everything and you will lose all your data.
The recovery partition is present so if a factory reset is what you want then you can do the following.

HP:

Press the power button to start the HP. Press and hold the F11 key to launch the HP Recovery Manager from the recovery partition.

Also if the drive is failing as it does show with the bad sectors being found it may be worth purchasing a set of recovery disks from HP. They should cost about $30 USD and include your OS, Drivers and all original programs that were installed.

This bit of information may be of some help if a new HDD is needed:

To order Recovery Disks (if needed):

HP / Compaq 1-800-474-6836

You will need the following:

Serial Number
Product Number
Model Number

The cost could be:

$16 + tax - Includes UPS Ground 5-7 days
$23 + tax - Includes UPS Ground 3 days
$29 + tax - Includes UPS Ground 2 days

Not sure about outside the USA.

Back to you gentlmen! :)

Thanks Donna and as always great information for uc577. Depending on the size of the hd this may not be that bad in the end.

You're welcome! If this is the original HDD, from the specs I found it is shipped with a 5OO GB HDD.

If that is indeed the right capacity a new hd can be bought for as little as 69.99 HERE at NewEgg with free shipping cost.

Thank you so very much everyone!
I had tried to find my notebook from the HP website and after entering the serial number, I would be told that they no longer carried disks for my make. As I'm not entirely computer savvy, the $69.99 "hd" you're referring to is the set of disks?

Also, I definitely want to do the factory reset but I'm afraid something will go wrong and I will have nothing to get my computer running again as I don't have disks. One thing that is still very confusing to me is this- should I do the factory reset bravely (or stupidly) and for some reason something goes wrong, can it be more damaging to my computer to not have a set of disks on hand for immediate use, or would it be equally okay to at that time order them even though more time will have passed? Basically, will that period of time waiting for the disks etc be potentially destructive to my hypothetically failed factory reset? I would obviously like to spare the cost of them if possible and if all goes well, I would rather not purchase them

Thank you again for the info, I really appreciate it :notworthy:

The other option is to purchase a OEM OS disk and you can reinstall you OS with it. Takes a little longer since you will then have to get all the original drivers for you system but we could get them before and you could put them on a flash drive or a cd.

No. That would be the cost of a new Hard Drive (aka in geek speak HDD) if you purchased and installed it yourself which is cheap, cheap, CHEAP! Probably without tax and shipping of course.

The cost of the recovery disks I posted above in post #53. Try calling that number to see if the discs are available for purchase. Don't believe everything you read on the web. The information could have been wrong.

Personally, I would not attempt the restore till we hear from either SleepyDude or rshaffer61. I've performed many factory restores, clean installs, etc. on healthy HDD's, but a bad sector has been detected on the HDD of your laptop and I truly have no idea what the factory restore would do in this situation.
