Whoops, sorry, wasn't finished with that last post.

As it rebooted, a window popped up with something like the Backup Restore feature stopped working, and Windows was looking for a solution. That window has gone away.

I am able to open up IE and AOL without the message. I can not connect to the internet. My modem is working (otherwise I wouldn't be able to post via DD's computer). My wireless icon on my toolbar has a yellow exclamation point, and says "No Internet Access"

I am getting that error whether wirelessor connected via ethernet cable.

Go to Control Panel > Network and Internet and Click on Connect to network

If that doesn't work do this:

Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:

• Restart the computer.
  
• As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  
• Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  
• Select English as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  
• Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  
• Select your user account an click Next.

To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:

• Insert the installation disc.
  
• Restart your computer.
  
• If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  
• Click Repair your computer.
  
• Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
  
• Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  
• Select your user account an click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:

Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt


• Select Command Prompt
  
• In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
  
• The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
  
• Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
  
• In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
  Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
  
• The tool will start to run.
  
• When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  
• Press Scan button.
  
• It will create a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

It's been hanging on "Windows is loading files..." for about 10 minutes. Is that normal?

Well it can take several minutes for Windows to check itself but I think it's probably time to try option 2.

Oh, I meant Farbars Recovery Scan tool that I posted the instructions for.

You may have to pull the plug on the infected machine if you can't interrupt the process.

I'm a little confused - and I'm sure it's all me, I'm fighting pneumonia, and my brain is feeling a little fuzzy.

By option 2, did you mean try with the windows recovery cd?

I have a cd that came with the lapop, ASUS Windows7 Recovery Media for Windows7 Products Did you mean to reconfigure BIOS so it boots from this cd, and follow that set of directions?

If so, you won't need you Installation Disk. If you can't, then follow the instructions set out for the Windows Installation Disk. You may not need to configure you BIOS settings but if you do and you are not sure I have some intructions that may help.

Forget that I ever said Option 2... I have just misled you saying that.

Ok.

Flash drive in laptop.

Restart. Hitting f8 brings me to a black and white screen where I can choose "Repair Your Computer." When I select that, the screen goes black, except for a line "Windows is loading files..." with a whitish bar beneath it. Nothing happens from there.

When I tried with the Recovery disk mentioned above, even with me pressing F8, it immediately went to the black screen with "Windows is loading files..." and the bar, xcept the bar is filling with white. It then went to a screen similar to the one with the Repair your Computer option, but that option is gone. I have Safe Mode; Safe Mode qirh Networking; Safe Mode with Command Promp, etc...

Do you mean the recovery disk that I mentioned? What do I choose, safe mode with command prompt?

I don't have a disk marked installation disk...

Hmm... is that one you made yourself or is it the Asus Recovery Disk?

I have a set of 3 recovery disks that I made myself. The one I have in hand is the ASUS Windows 7 Recovery Media for Windows 7 Products.

I have a W2K Pro installation disk, but not one for Windows 7.
