I have an HP Pavilion using Windows Vista. The computer seems to boot up and run normally without the ethernet cable hooked up, but when I plug the cable in and attempt to open Internet Explorer, after a few seconds the entire screen goes black, then a scary looking message with the FBI seal on it appears informing me that my computer has been locked because it has been accessing child pornography and/or accessing terrorist related materials. The message covers the entire screen, will go away when I Ctrl-Alt-Delete, showing that my computer has indeed beeh locked. The message tells me I must now pay a $200.00 fine by buying some kind of money card at Walgreens or Rite-Aid and entering a code from the card. I cannot download any fixes because the computer is locked. I've started in Safe Mode and have scanned it with the McAfee Anti-Virus software I have but it doesn't fix the problem.

Hello Greg55 and welcome to my office here at G2G! :)

My nick is maliprog and I'll be your technical support on this issue. Before we start please read my notes carefully:

NOTES:
  • Malware removal is NOT instantaneous, most infections require several courses of action to completely eradicate.
  • Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean
  • Kindly follow my instructions in the order posted. Order is crucial in cleaning process.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans or fix on your own without my direction.
  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described.
  • If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please come back to me for clarification.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste it to include the log in your reply.
  • You must reply within 3 days or your topic will be closed

Step 1

Please restart in Safe mode with networking and run these two steps from there:

  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe mode with networking option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Step 2

We need to disable malware processes on your system first
  • Download TheKiller to your Desktop
  • Note that TheKiller is renamed as explorer.exe
  • Run it by double click (If running Vista or Windows 7, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Press OK button after program finish
  • Do not restart your system after this step
NOTE: If malware blocks TheKiller from running please try to run it several more times

Step 3

Download OTL to your Desktop

  • Double click on the icon to run it (If running Vista or Windows 7, right click on it and select "Run as an Administrator"). Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Under the Custom Scan/Fixes box paste this in

netsvcs
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
/md5start
explorer.exe
winlogon.exe
Userinit.exe
svchost.exe
services.exe
/md5stop
%systemroot%\*. /mp /s
%systemdrive%\$Recycle.Bin|@;true;true;true
CREATERESTOREPOINT

  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post them if you need to start a new topic.

Step 4

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • OTL log
  • OTL Extras log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post using "Add Reply" button

Maliprog, thanks for the reply and welcome to my world. I'd like to forward some background info that may make the process more efficient;
I'm an older guy and consider my computer skills to be fairly basic, but I think I'll be able to perform the operations needed. On the plus side of that, I can follow directions and am willing to do so, but please be patient, I may be asking some elementary questions.

I have a lot of obligations in my personal and professional life and don't have much spare time. I'll probably be working on the computer at night, after everything and everyone else calms and quiets down.

You do understand that I cannot get on-line with the infected computer, right? I'm talking here on a laptop that is across the room. For downloads that need to go on the infected computer, I'll have to use this laptop to download software to a thumb drive, then xfer that to the infected computer. Does that sound right?

Again, thanx for the reply, I'll be back to you when I complete the first steps you recommended.

OK. Before you download and transfer tools we need to disinfect your USB memory so you can transfer files and not get infected.

Do this on the clean computer only once:

  • 1 - Flash Drive Disinfector
Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  • Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you run it. Don't delete this folder...it will help protect your drives from future infection.

After this step you can continue with scans I posted in my first post.

I mistakenly clicked on Run Scan rather than Quick Scan when I ran the OTL scan. Here's one scan log, I'll add the other one in the next post.

Hi Greg55,

Step 1

NOTE: This fix is custom made for this system only and for current system state! Don't try to run it on another system!

Please close all running programs and Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL
    IE - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyOverride" = <local>;*.local
    IE - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings: "ProxyServer" = http=127.0.0.1:60788
    O4 - HKCU..\Run: [conhost] C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\conhost.exe File not found
    O4 - HKCU..\Run: [GoogleChrome] C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\guy12.exe ()
    O4 - HKCU..\Run: [mqqrnrii] C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\jooytggnh\gljqjldaffm.exe File not found
    F3 - HKCU WinNT: Load - (C:\Users\Owner\AppData\Local\Temp\csrss.exe) - File not found

    :Files
    ipconfig /flushdns /c

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post the fix log it produces in your next reply or you can find it in C:\_OTL\MovedFiles
Step 2

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 3

Please don't forget to include these items in your reply:

  • OTL fix log
  • Malwarebytes log
It would be helpful if you could post each log in separate post using "Add Reply" button

Maliprog,
System will now boot up and allow internet access; seems to be working nominally, but I am not the main user on this system.
The computer stumbled a few times when trying to open Yahoo sowe could check e-mai, but did open the program after several tries.
I am attaching the log from the Kaspersky Virus scan.

OK. Let's see what we have now.

  • Run OTL.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open notepad window. OTL.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file, and post it with your next reply.

Hi Greg55,

Your logs and system are clean now. I'm glad we fix up your computer.

Step 1

Please close all running programs and Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [resethosts]
    [clearallrestorepoints]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
Step 2

We need to clean up your PC from programs we used.

Please start OTL one more time and click CleanUp button. OTL will restart your system at the end.

In case that any of the software we used in this fix still remains on your system please delete it manually (Right click on it and select Delete).

General recommendations

Here are some recommendations you should follow to minimize infection risk in the future:

1. Something to read

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?

2. Make Backups of Important Files

Please read this article Home Computer Data Backup.

3. Regularly update your software

To eliminate design flaws and security vulnerabilities, all software needs to be updated to the latest version or the vendor’s patch installed.

You should download Update Checker from here. The program will automaticly check for newer version of software installed on your system.
