Hello, hopefully this is in the right area. I am having an issue with my Windows 7 64 bit laptop. I did an update and pressed the “restart now” to let the changes take effect, when it restarted it got to the “starting windows” screen but it stopped there for a while then flashed a blue screen quickly. Then it restarted itself and goes to a menu that says “windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause…” I have two options “ Launch Startup repair (recommended)” or “start windows normally”. When I choose the Launch startup repair it says “windows is loading files” and then it shows a black screen with a mouse cursor, I can move the cursor but nothing loads. Any ideas how I can fix this?

Take the "start windows normally" path but press F8 during boot to get to the Advanced Boot Options Menu. Pick Last know good configuration, see if that gets you out of the BSOD loop. If so then you need to change Automatic Updates to notify you but not download or install. Once that's done, apply the updates one at a time until you figure out which one is causing the problem, then set it so you are not asked about it again.

When I press F8 and it goes into "advanced boot options" then click "Last known configuration (advanced)" it says "starting windows" and shows the windows logo then briefly shows the blue screen and reboots.
