Hi, I know that I have some Virses on my computer and I don't know what more I can do. I let a cousin use my computer while I was on vacation and I don't know if he downloaded something or what. But whenever I try to view a News Video or watch a Music Video while using my Yahoo Browser my Yahoo Browser freezes and then it closes everything and it says that it has something to do with my fltmgr.dll. Also I have PartyPoker icon shortcut on my desktop and when I right click on it and look at the properties it says that it's on my desktop and when I went to look for it I couldn't find it anywhere. He said that he didn't download partypoker or any games so I don't know how that got on my computer. So I deleted the shortcut and everytime I reboot my computer it's there again. whenever I do a search on the internet, the topic that I put in has nothing to do with the results I get back

So I did a Virus scan using my McAfee and it shows that I have 2 Adware on my computer, one is C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe and C:\WINDOWS\systems32\msxct.exe and it said that it couldn't be cleaned or deleted. I know I have lots more on my computer but it's not picking it up. I think I have a BHO and Buddy Bargin or something like that on my computer as well. I went to Microsoft and updated my windows, I did all of the steps at the top of the forum and I'm still having the same problems. Here's my HJT Log, Can someone please help

Thanks,

Hello Brieanna21 and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

Wow! What a mess! Let’s see what I can do to clean this up. It might take a couple of hits. But most important is that you are about to lose your internet connection capability, let’s do that as the first fix.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable AOL Spyware Protection from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything.

A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it.

1. Please download LSP Fix
2. Run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
3. Check the I know what I'm doing box.
4. In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of fltmgr.dll
5. Select every instance of fltmgr.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
6. When you are done click Finish>>.

If you are still able to use your PC, please download the following programmes we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CWShredder
CCleaner
Nail Fix

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Please open the trial version of Ewido Security Suite, and update the definitions to the latest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please install Nailfix, unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly, this is normal.

Install Ewido Security Suite (it is a 14-day trial version of the programme).
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The programme will prompt you to update click the OK button
  • The programme will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
    • Binder
    • Crypter
    • Archives
  • Click on Start Scan
  • Let the programme scan the machine
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report
  • Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.
Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Visual Networks

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Please delete these folders (if present) using Windows Explorer:

C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe
c:\windows\system32\fltmgr.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and also an Uninstall Log:

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click Save List (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

and I will take another look.

Hello again Brieanna

Mostly gone, but alas the NAIL is persistent. I can’t see anything else though. Please redo the nail fix. Follow the instructions to the letter. One question: do you really only have under 25,000 files on your PC? that's not very many at all, but it is the number of files scanned by Ewido.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel (if present):(click Start>Settings>Control Panel)

Viewpoint Media Player (it is spyware!)

Please notify me of any other programmes that you don’t recognise in that list in your next response

Please Open Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

what do you mean by *Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C: in Killbot

I'm also having problems with the Nailfix when I click on it nothing happens, the only thing that happens is, the file opens and there's two other files inside. One that says Nailfix with a picture of a gear on it and the other say's Process. When I click on the Nailfix folder a black screen comes up that says "Please unzip completely and rerun this file. Press any key to continue". And when I click on the file that says Process it ask if I want to extract all files. So could you please tell me what to do. I think I'm doing something wrong LOL

Thanks again

Hello again

I am happy to help as always. The download file in a zipped file called Nailfix.zip. When doubleclicked it opens into a file called Nailfix. Double click that and it opens into 2 files nailfix.cmd and Process.exe. Double click nailfix.cmd, and a black screen appears with the words "Process.exe missing. Please unzip completely and rerun this file. Press any key to continue"

Just press any key, and it bursts into life.

Sorry this is a little bit different from the previous tutorial, but we have no control over host sites, and we don't find out about changes until someone tells us. Thanks for the heads-up.

Also:

what do you mean by *Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C: in Killbot

.
If you can see the text with the instructions, then copy and paste the file names into the Killbox.

Hope that helps.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

Your computer is now allowed to play with all the other computers. Happy safe surfing Brieanna!
