Greetings!
You guys have been fantastic the couple of times I've had to get help in the past so I'm trying again. I hope you can help me.
My Compaq laptop running Windows XP Home version 5.1 (build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.120504-1619 : Service Pack 3) is making a connection to my Linksys wireless router (the icon in my system tray says "Status: Connected, Signal Strength: Excellent, etc.) but Internet Explorer will not find a site and Outlook will not pick up email. I tried to use Chrome, also unsuccessfully, but its error message might help in diagnosing the problem - "...because the DNS look-up failed...).
I have rebooted my computer, my wireless modem and my router, all to no avail.
Can you help?
Thanks in advance!

Are you acquiring your DNS server IP automatically?
It's possible that your ISP gave you an IP address for your DNS server but got changed in your adapter or router somehow.

Not to step on any toes here but coould you please provide the following logs in your next reply.

Please download MINITOOLBOX and run it.
http://download.blee...MiniToolBox.exe

Checkmark following boxes:

Report IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
List Devices (problems only)

Click Go and Attach the result.

Download Autoruns and Autorunsc Unzip it to your desktop and then double click autoruns.exe After the scan is finished then click on File>>>>>>>>>>>Save The default name will be autoruns.arn make sure to save it as Autoruns.txt under the file type option. in other words make sure it is a .txt file instead of .arn Attach the text in your next reply.

Thanks to Sera and rockmilk for their replies.
Since my post, I discovered that my DNS had changed from automatic to manual and, according to my ISP's tech support, that the IP addresses that were set manually were put there by some kind of malware. I reset the DNS to automatic and my internet and email access returned.
I did a little bit of digging to see whether I could figure out what malware might have caused the problem. I got a clean bill of health from both Malwarebytes and Avast.
So, while I do have internet and email access again and everything seems to be running smoothly at the moment, I'm still somewhat concerned that my DNS was reset somehow without my knowledge and would very much like to figure out how that happened.
In the hopes that you can help, I've attached the MiniToolBox result.txt file as well as the autoruns.txt file, as you suggested. Perhaps these scans will help us figure out what happened and whether there is still a problem lurking within my computer's bowels.
Thanks for your willingness to help.

If you feel that there might be some type of malware involved here then I suggest that you post in the virus removal area because these logs arent going to show us any malware.

Thanks. I'll post over there and see if someone can help me. But, hey, seeing as I did the scans you suggested, did the logs indicate that I have any problems that need correcting?

1. Right click on My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager
2. Left click the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers group
3. Right click on Primary IDE and hit Uninstall there most likely will be more than one uninstall all of them prior to rebooting each may request a reboot after uninstalling just make sure that you have uninstalled them all prior to the reboot.
4. Reboot the computer, the Primary IDE drivers will re-install themselves after you reboot.
5. Go back to the Device Manager and Left click the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers group again.
6. Right click on Primary IDE Channel and go to Properties > Advanced Settings tab.
7. Make sure that both Device's Modes are on "DMA if available".
