Hello,

I was infected with Live Security Professional on 9/28/12. When I start my computer, I hear 3 dings and a woman's voice stating "Threat has been detected". Three pop up boxes appear. One is titled Live Security Professional and it states "Virus Detected. A tool used to remotely attack hackers computers and steal personal information. Therefore, it is recommended to remove it" and it will state the names of different viruses that it says I have: Svchost.stealth.keyloger, packed generic.368, w32.silly-FDC.BDQ, TrojanExprez, etc....and it seems to give a new name every time I turn my computer on. It asks if I want to Continue Unprotected or Remove Threat.

The 2nd pop up is titled Live Security Professional Firewall and it has a blurb about being from microsoft and do I want to Continue Unprotected or Remove Threat. I have not clicked on either of these 2 pop ups because I figured if I did, it would make it worse??? The 3rd box says "Warning Application cannot be executed. The file ctfmon.exe is infected. Please activate your antivirus software." And the file name there changes too.

I have Norton anti-virus installed and have run a full scan twice and it can't detect it. I then downloaded and tried 1. Norton Power Eraser and 2. Norton Bootable Recovery Tool. Neither worked. I then tried Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool and that can't locate it either.

I watched a video on youtube showing how to remove "Platinum" in 2 mins which I tried, but no success because I couldn't get the renamed taskmgr to run. I would highly appreciate any input you may have.

  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Hello Essexboy,

Thank you so much for replying to my plea for help. I have completed the first step of your solution and will paste my OTL log below. However, I do want to say that after I did the reboot, I got a message saying that my computer was unable to start and then Startup Repair popped up and said it was checking my system for problems. It could not start up my computer and then Recovery Manager popped up and I had to do a System Restore, so I restored it to 9/22/12. System Restore said it did not complete successfully (which really gave me a scare), but I was able to restart my computer in Safe Mode which is where I am now. And in Safe Mode, I got a pop up saying that System Restore completed successfully.

I will paste the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report after I have completed it.

Hello again Essexboy,

I was surprised that the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware quick scan only took 1 min and 56 secs and that no malicious items were found for me to delete. I am now in "normal" mode and the Live Security Professional pop ups have disappeared. However, I am still leery, so I'm going to go ahead and run the Full scan. Thank you so so much!!!!!!!

Intriguing that it did that .. However, as you are now back in normal mode
The MBAM quick and full scan in reality are not very different, so I would not expect it to find anything

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Go to control panel
  • Select folder options (Appearance > Folder options in category view)
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

Upgrading Java:
  • Go to this site and click Do I have Java
  • It will check your current version and then offer to update to the latest version

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point
  • Go to Control Panel and select System
  • Select System
  • On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
  • Select System Protection Tab
  • Select Create at the bottom
  • Type in a name i.e. Clean
  • Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones
  • GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
  • Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
  • Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

I have completed all of the new steps you have given me. However, after I installed Filehippo update checker, it told me that I had several programs that needed updating. I clicked on the first one, which I think was Acrobat Reader, and it opened in a new window. As it didn't run automatically, I had to click the download button and then my norton popped up and said it was a known virus, so I exited immediately. I clicked Update Checker again to see what other updates it said I needed and it wouldn't run at all. I deleted it.

I'm mentioning it because you and I just did all this work to give my computer a clean bill of health and I almost infected it again!

I love how you have helped me and am applying to GeekU in the hopes that I can do the same for others.

Methinks that may be Norton now being over protective.. I use filehippo

It is only a recommended programme and not essential as long as you do the updates manually. This just saves having to look for them

I wasn't saying Filehippo was bad. Just that maybe the link they supplied wasn't a good one.
