OK, thanks. I appreciate your patience. Believe it or not, I actually do have some idea of what I am doing with computers. I build my own, but I am clueless on malware and weak on networking issues. But give me time and I can figure out most things.

OK, well I guess that cinches it. After restarting it came up with a System Restore window that says:

System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed.
Details:
System Restore failed while scanning the file system on the drive C:\ The drive might be corrupt. You might want to retry System Restore after running chkdisk /r on this disk. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0x80070571)

So still say it's fried?

Tried again with a different restore point and got the BSOD. I hate viruses.

Yes it did. I just have to figure out and take the time to save iTunes files etc, for the kids so they don't lose it all. Was hoping to avoid that, oh well.

You should be able to get to the recovery partition this way

Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.

To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
  • Insert the installation disc.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Select US as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
    [list]
    Startup Repair
    System Restore
    Windows Complete PC Restore
    Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
    Command Prompt

OK, I will have to do that later. I have to get a disk to backup some data first. Reinstalling Windows will erase all the files correct?
