Strange things:

my hard disk is rapidly filling up
I cannot backup (no space, as I undestand it)
I tried to restore-- but there are "no resore ponts on this computer"

I ran a diskcheck
I'm currently running McAfee full computer scan

Help! I'm drowning!

Lets have a quick look at the hard drive layout and see what sort of files are taking the space

Download and install windirstat
Run the programme
Select your main drive
When the pacmen have finished there will be a graphic display of your drive
Please attach that as a screenshot

Also if you can see the weird folder then let me know what it is

OK looking at that data your hardrive is only 44Gb, and windows is taking up 26Gb of that space
Leaving just 18Gb for other data... Of that 18Gb you really should have at least 4Gb free for windows to do general housekeeping
User files are taking up about 10Gb (this would be music/photos etc..)
The remainder is probably the programmes that you have installed.

A 44Gb drive for the later versions of windows is too small I would recommend at least 100Gb
If you purchased a second hard drive, you could transfer all the personal stuff to that drive and just leave the smaller C drive for windows and programme files

Yes initially copy it to determine how much space has been saved. Once you are happy about it there and have determined that you are still able to access it then delete
Once you have deleted then run a disc defragment

Good morning Essexboy!

I moved many many files and deleted many many yesterday, then, overnight, defragged,

When I woke up, defrag had finished-- and I had over 6 GB free
Within one minute of using the computer, it went down to 38 MB

BUT the computer is very fast now.

What next??
Thanks, m

Now 100 is free. Wonder what next. In the meantime, I'm backing up and creating a backup point. Hope everything works.

Registry errors--.jpg I do regularly run ccleaner, cleaning the registry and I've kept most registry backups. Can they be of use? I've attached my registry report-- after the first wcp entry at the bottom, all-- hundreds maybe -- read the same. m

OK lets clear all the windows reports. There is a step by step guide here, this is the bit you want 6. To Delete All Problems this will empty it

Next we will go for an empty of the temporary files..

I would recommend that you do not use the registry component of CC . Remove all bar the latest backup of those

Clear Cache/Temp Files
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop
  • Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
  • Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
  • Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Once done how much space do you have available now ?
