Excalibur:

It wouldn't let me "merge successfullly" when I opened fixme.reg. It gave me the message, "Cannot import C:\MYDOCU~1\FIXME.REG: The specified file is not a registry script. You can import only registry files."

In an unrelated problem, when the Norton AntiVirus wouldn't load, it redirected me to the Symantec security website. I ran the suggested scan from there, and it said it found Adware.BetterInternet and Adware.WinProtect on my computer. But when I ran the Symantec tool to remove Adware.BetterInternet, it said no files on the computer had that malware.

I thought we had all the kinks ironed out, but now it looks like I may have no virus protection at the moment, as it seems Norton isn't working.

Anyway, at about 10:00 a.m. CDT today (Wednesday), I'm leaving to go out of town for five days. I'll check back in right before I leave, but I won't check in again until I return.

Thanks.

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT 4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults]
"http"=dword:00000003
"https"=dword:00000003
"ftp"=dword:00000003
"file"=dword:00000003
"@ivt"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults]
"http"=dword:00000003
"https"=dword:00000003
"ftp"=dword:00000003
"file"=dword:00000003
"@ivt"=dword:00000001

Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully

Reboot and post a new Hi Jack this log please ;)

Are you going to keep Norton? If not then I can give you some good free alternatives. If you are going to keep it, is it possible to do a reinstall? Also, are you having a problem with any other program, or just the Norton?

Please let me know,

Thanks,

Hi balhoff,

Can u please do this one when you get back, i know it looks similiar to the last one, but thats OK ;)

Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as fixme2.reg (make sure that Save as Type is set at "All Files") on your Desktop. Ensure there is no space at above REGEDIT 4.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults]
"http"=dword:00000003
"https"=dword:00000003
"ftp"=dword:00000003
"file"=dword:00000003
"@ivt"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\ProtocolDefaults]
"http"=dword:00000003
"https"=dword:00000003
"ftp"=dword:00000003
"file"=dword:00000003
"@ivt"=dword:00000001

Locate fixme2.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer "Yes" and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully

Reboot and post a new Hi Jack this log please ;)

Please let me know,

Thanks,

Later today, I'll try to reinstall Norton, as you may recall that it stopped working after we ran the first "fixme.reg." (Of course, I'm not sure if they're related.)

Thanks.

I reinstalled Norton AntiVirus. Everything seems to be working fine. An Ad-Aware scan revealed only some cookies.

I noticed that the last Hijack This log that you had me perform still had one O15. I still don't know what that is, but you had wanted them gone before. Does the last Hijack This log, above, show anything else that I need to take care of?

Of the many types of scans that you've helped me perform to clean the computer, is there anything I should do regularly? Anything else that I should do regularly?

Thanks.

Hi balhoff,

I want to aplogize on the time it took me to respond. I had some severe internet connection problems that I hope are behind me now.

Back to the last 15!.

1. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

2. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

3. Open HiJack and do a scan.

4. Put a Check next to the following items:

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone (HKLM)

5. click the Fix Checked box

Reboot back and normal mode and please give me a fresh hijackthis log.

Thanks,

Of the many types of scans that you've helped me perform to clean the computer, is there anything I should do regularly? Anything else that I should do regularly?

Thanks.

Alright!!! Love to see it clean!!

I would run CleanUp! regularly. I would also run Activescan regularly. You can delete/uninstall anything else that I have asked you to download ;)

Make sure you keep your AntiVirus up to date at all times ;) I would download at least 2 spyware detection programs and run them very frequently. (also keep them updated)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.
