Wireless connection: Very Low

I recently moved in to 2 floor house with the modem and wireless router upstairs, i have a

-Belkin_N1_Wireless_928FDF

The connection is "very low", i am right under router downstairs and I still get bad connection.Upstairs connectivity is normal usually full bars. This router is a few years old could that be the problem? what else can it be? If anyone has any ideas I would like to hear them. thanks
