I did a system restore last night and it did not help, made a few more things 'not work'.
This morning i undid that restore and the problem with UO has gone away.
I have not run the last things you asked me to run yet. I am a bit dubious now in case
something else goes wrong. I am back to just the explorer.exe problem now and i am wondering whether to just tolerate that.

This is a non invasive scan

Download and run OTL

Download OTL by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click on OTL.exe to run it.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened and the that I need posted back here
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized - save this one on your desktop in case I ask for it later
  • Please post the contents of OTL.txt in your next reply.

When i try and run OTL it stops responding as soon as it gets to 'Scanning Firefox settings' (with or without Zonealarm turned on).

Hello

I am not seeing anything in the reports that would indicate that this is malware causing the problem

I have even gone over your other thread and what I want you to try is to uninstall ZA for a short time to see if that is the problem

I know you have said that you have used them for years but it may have been an update or even an update from windows that has changed

Hi.
I have tried that more than once (zonealarm uninstall). My liscence expires soon and i will be installing the latest zonealarm.
Will see what happens then and if the problem goes away i will let you know.
Thanks for all the help.
