I am trying to test connectivity between from a redhat server to a windows server 2008 r2 server using telnet. My connection to the port on the server is timing out. I know the windows server does not have telnet installed. But, does it need it to be installed to receive a telnet connections from another server?

I was thinking that it would just need to port opened and something listening on it.

Hi,

You don't need to have telnet installed. Make sure you have the port open on the windows firewall or any other firewall installed.
Also make sure the program you have is listening to the port, use tcpview to see if the port is opened and the active connections.
