Hi all, I suddenly cannot get VLC player to correctly play any videos without occasional-to-frequent skipping--even after uninstalls, updates, and re-installs. (However, Media Player Classic plays everything just fine.)

I started my search for a solution with a topic in the virus & maleware area here [http://www.geekstogo...inconclusive/]. If you read it, you can see we were inconclusive on whatever may be the cause(s) (though I proposed/asked about several).

At least the tech person (maliprog) helped me to verify that the sys. is clean. . . . Thus he recommended that I post this issue here.

Yes, I already tried the VLC suggestions. Also, the latest version does not work well (again, skipping, and never worked well) for me to play the largest variety of files & file types. Rather, 1.1.5 was always the one that worked best for me--up until fairly recently. . . .

BUT bigger problem: despite the help of the previous tech person, maliprog, in that thread I included and us verifying that the sys. is clean from malware & viruses--I just received my second recent "blue screen of death."

Maliprog had been hopeful about no more of these, saying

We did defragment and disk check and usually this solved BSODs for good.

This time it happened following an uninstall & reinstall of VLC--and in the middle of playing a file w/ VLC.

OK, here are the zipped minidump files. I am including another one that I had after your reply--after I tried a microsoft net framework 4 install. . . . Also, I installed windows debugging tools to see if I, too, could look at the cause myself--but even with WinDbg I am having permissions issues viewing the minidump files (which I read some further into but still could not access, so I hope you are able to view them). Sorry, I didn't mean to seem impatient--I was just concerned you thought I knew more than I do. And I didn't realize the time factor. . . .

Ok. I did the needed driver updates. (And I was surprised they were needed, as I thought my Toshiba service center was capable of checking for such updates--but apparently it was not detecting these much needed ones.)

Also, yes, both the check disk and sys. file check have been completed fine.

But VLC is still not working properly--again, confusing since it always did up until somewhat recently. . . . It's more annoying than essential, esp. since Media Player Classic still works fine. . . . But I am concerned that it may just be a matter of time until another BSOD. . . .

Hi--Yes, I installed the storage one.

I installed three: Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver, Intel Display Driver, & Intel Chipset SW Installation Utility.

The LAN & WIFI looked fine w/ their versions, and I have had no problems there--so I left them. I also have a 2nd Realtek wireless adapter that I sometimes plug in, so I was hesitant to change any realtek wireless driver for that reason as well.

I don't know what RAID is. From the bit I briefly looked up w/ google, I don't believe my sys. is set up that way. . . .

please would you try VLC using it to play a file from the hard drive

Is it still faulty playing from there


and what please is the exact version of the 505

You will have to comission that for the exact model of the NB505

Also I know you say you have tried the solutions in the first link I sent






With Windows Vista and with Windows 7, both DirectX and Windows GDI output modules will disable Aero, so if you want to use Aero, please use DirectX 3D (should be default). Remember to press Save to save VLC settings and restart VLC after that to make sure changes are enabled.

May I ask which if any you changed and what if any difference it made

and to save me going through the WHOLE of the link have you increased the cache size
Increase Caching in VLC

To change the buffer cache size in VLC click on Media \ Open Network Stream.



At the bottom right of the screen, check Show extended options.



Now increase the number in the Caching field. By default ours was set to 200ms and we bumped it up to 500ms or 0.5 seconds. When done click the Play button.



Now you should be able to enjoy your video stutter free.

Hi--I tried all of the above suggestions in both my previously dependable vlc version and in the most updated vlc version.

However, there is not any option in either one that says "DirectX 3D." There is "Direct X" and simply "Direct 3D," and I tried both. . . .

[Also, I'm not sure what "Aero" is, though it sounds familiar. . . .]

It still skips/stuttuers and even gets pixelated on occasion.

Actually, though, I am still confused why any of these changes are suddenly necessary when they never were before: i.e. I have been unable so far to find/fix the root cause of the problem to revert vlc to working the way it always did. But, again, by this point I find it mostly just annoying. As long as Media Player Classic keeps working fine, then I should be happy I suppose.

My biggest concern is the BSOD making a re-appearance sometime in the near future. . . . So maybe we should just give up on vlc at this point--but could you please leave this topic open for at least another week in case BSOD comes back?
