I have a Dell computer running XP media center edition, it is stuck in some kind of loop, keeps restarting after it flashes a screen with options for recovery console or media center edition. If I clidk really fast I can click on either of these. clicking on the media center edition one just starts this process all over, clicking recovery console brings up a screen which says NTLDR is compressed, press Ctrl Alt Del to restart, if I press Crtl Alt Del, it just restarts, the restarting process over again. I have tryed pressing F8 but cannot access safe mode because it just keeps restarting. It was running really slow before this all started, happening. thanks again, Mary

Hello and welcome to the Geeks to Go Virus, Spyware & Malware Removal forum. My name is Josh and I will be helping you remove your infection. I am only human not superman - I can make errors but will do my best to help you as best I can so we can solve your problems. If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, I would appreciate you letting me know. Please include a clear description of the problems you're having along with any steps you may have performed so far if you haven't already.

Some of the following instructions to begin the malware removal process can be hard to follow - let me know if you have any questions. Please read all of my responses through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described. I would recommend printing them out, if you can, as you can check off each step as you complete it. Also please do not attempt any disinfection procedures without my instruction as things can go wrong that way or lengthen the time it takes to disinfect your computer. Also please follow your topic to conclusion or your system may not be completely clean, and it will be more vulnerable to future infections.

Throughout our interactions I will be using canned speeches. These are premade speeches for different scenarios we will encounter. If you find errors like bad links in my canned speeches please let me know so I can fix them.

Please copy and paste all logs into your reply. Do not attach logs to a post unless I tell you to or if they don't fit in the post.

One more thing - please refrain from using your computer until it is disinfected unless you absolutely have to (unless you are following my disinfection procedures) - if you do have to use your computer please disconnect it from the Internet - that way the current malware cannot propagate further infections.

Expect no more than 36 hours between your post and my response unless World War 3 breaks out and I will need at most 48 hours for initial analysis of your OTL log. Good luck! After 4 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

I have some questions for you before we get started:
Do you have access to another computer?
If so can you burn a CD?
Also if so do you have a flash drive with at least 4 GB capacity?
Do you have access to a Windows XP Media Center install cd?
Can you access safe mode? - try pressing F8 repeatedly before you select the media center option in the boot menu, then select the media center option, then don't stop pressing F8 until either the computer restarts or you get to safe mode. Try several times and if you can't get to safe mode let me know.

Answers to your questions:

I do have access to another computer.

I can burn a CD. I ran an AVG CD and it found 2 Trojan horse generic, and 1 Trojan horsse Rootkit, I let the program rename those.

I have a flash drive with 1 GB cpacity, if I need more, I will get one when we get to that point.

I do not have access to a Windows XP Media Center install cd.

I cannot access safemode. pressing f8 gets me to the screen it is supposed to but when I press safemode it just goes back into the restarting loop.

thankyou for your assistance

Hello mary58. We will now boot into an XP environment off a cd then run two special diagnostic utilities to scan for malware. Please do the following:

Please print these instruction out so that you know what you are doing

File details OTLPENet.exe
Bytes=126,850,486
MB=120.9
MD5=8A7C5BA1C92552ADDCC5E468D0AA069A

  • Download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
  • Download ListParts and save it to the same flash drive.
  • Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop on a working computer
  • Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  • Double click OTLPENet.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
  • Reboot your infected system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :)
  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
  • Hook up the flash drive to the computer
  • Run FRST by navigating to the flash drive then open FRST.exe
  • The tool will start to run.
  • When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  • Press Scan button.
  • It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply
  • Run ListParts by navigating to the flash drive then open ListParts.exe
  • Press the Scan button.
  • When finished scanning it will make a log Result.txt on your flash drive.
  • Please post me the contents of the log.

Hi mary58. It appears that the OTLPE environment is not seeing your hard drive. We will now try another method of analyzing your computer. Please do the following:

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer.

  • Run GETxPUD.exe
  • A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  • Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  • The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  • Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  • Next download driver.sh to your USB drive
  • Remove the USB & CD and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  • The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  • Gently tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Remove the USB drive and insert it back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt
Please note - all text entries are case sensitive
Copy and paste the report.txt for my review.

Hi mary58, your getxpud log didn't look bad. The next step is to try a system restore. Please do the following:

Download rst.sh to the USB drive
  • Insert the USB drive and CD in the Sick computer and boot the computer from the CD again
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • Expand your USB (sdb1)
  • Confirm that you see rst.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash rst.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located at sdb1 named enum.log
  • Plug that USB back into the clean computer and open it
Please note: If you have an ethernet connection you can access the internet by way of xPUD (Firefox). You can perform all these steps on your sick computer. When you download the download will reside in the Download folder. It can be found under the File tab also. You can similarly access our thread by way of this OS too so you can send the logs that way.

Please also note - all text entries are case sensitive

Copy and paste the enum.log for my review.

Hi Mary58. The next step is to see if there is an available registry backup we can use to help get your computer booting properly. We will do this with system restore invoked by an xpud script. Please do the following:

  • Insert the USB drive and CD in the Sick computer and boot the computer from the CD again
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • Expand your USB (sdb1)
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash rst.sh -r
  • Type RP718
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located at sdb1 named restore.log
  • Please try to boot into normal Windows now and indicate if you were successful
Please note - all text entries are case sensitive

Copy and paste the restore.log from your USB drive for my review.
